Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
They might've been road weary, but the Brandon Wheat Kings gave no sign of it as they faced the Prince Albert Raiders for the second time this season. They took two points from a hard-working opponent in a tough building to close out their trip.
Jayden Wiens scored twice and Dominik Petr added another, and Ethan Eskit stopped 25 of 26 shots he faced as the Wheat Kings downed the Raiders 3-1. The win came at the tail end of a three-game-in-three-nights stretch.
"When the schedule came out and this game was on the docket I went, 'Oh boy, this is going to be a tough one'," said head coach and GM Marty Murray. "But the guys persevered. We showed a lot of grit and character and commitment."
After the first period passed scoreless, the Wheat Kings roared out of the gate in the second. The top line exerted pressure right out of the gate, but it was Wiens who finally broke the seal. Nolan Flamand claimed the rebound of a shot by Charlie Elick and rather than just blast it at the net, he slid it across the ice to Wiens for the tap in.
Wiens scored another goal from his office in front of the net, again set up by Flamand, on the first power play of the night for the Wheat Kings. Wiens tipped the initial shot, found his own rebound, and stuffed it home.
A broken play and a missed clear turned into the first Raiders goal of the game as Hayden Pakkala fed Niall Crocker in front and he was able to slide it through the five-hole to cut into the lead.
But the Wheat Kings got their lead back. Matteo Michels shot for a rebound and got one, with the puck bouncing off of the shoulder of Chase Coward and into the slot, where Petr was waiting to rifle it home.
A late push with the net empty yielded nothing for the Raiders, as the Wheat Kings kept them to the outside for the most part and got some good saves from Eskit when they didn't. With the win, they finish the road trip 2-2 and head home for a lengthy homestand to start December.
