Portland, Ore. - Ryan Miller tallied his first two WHL goals for the Winterhawks, but third period scoring flurry gave the Spokane Chiefs a 5-2 win on Sunday.
Down 2-1 in the final frame, Spokane's Saige Weinstein and Rasmus Ekström scored 31 seconds apart to eclipse Portland's lead. Conner Roulette then added an empty-netter late in the contest and netminder Dawson Cowan earned credit for a second empty-netter after a stray shot ricocheted back down the ice into Portland's net.
Earlier in the contest, Spokane star Berkly Catton broke the ice 9:13 into the first with his 14th goal of the season. But the Miller show took over the rest of the frame, as the 16-year-old scored his first, then his second, career goals. The Alberta native tallied his first after an Alex Thompson shot from the blue line hit a body in front, dropping kindly for Miller to fire a low shot past Cowan. Eight minutes later, Miller posted his second off the rush with another stick-side shot after being set up by Kyle McDonough and Luca Cagnoni. McDonough earned his first WHL regular season point on the play.
A scoreless second was not without its chances but Maric and Cowan were sharp at both ends. Maric finished the night with 32 saves on 35 shots, while Cowan picked up the win with 34 stops on 36 shots for the Chiefs.
Portland's next contest comes on the road next Friday in Wenatchee. Tune in to WHL Live at 7:00 P.M. for that divisional clash. The Winterhawks wrap up a three-in-three weekend tomorrow at the VMC against the Spokane Chiefs - puck drop is set for 5:00 P.M. for that contest.
