December 11, 2005 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Bridgeport Islanders News Release
HERSHEY, PA - The American Hockey League's Bridgeport Sound Tigers, top affiliate of the National Hockey League's New York Islanders, lost 4-2 on the road to the Hershey Bears Sunday in the final game of three in as many days away from home, as well as eight overall in the last 12 days.
Hershey opened the scoring 41 seconds into the game when Brooks Laich pushed home his seventh goal of the season off an assist from Graham Mink, who increased a point streak to four games on the play.
The Sound Tiger tied the score at 1-1 then took a 2-1 lead with a pair of goals 1:17 apart early in the middle frame. First, Steve Regier redirected a Matt Koalska centering feed for his fifth goal of the year and second in as many games at the 6:12 mark. Then, Sean Bergenheim knocked in the rebound of a Jeff Hamilton shot for his fifth goal of the season with Jeremy Colliton collecting the other helper at the 7:29 mark. Hamilton extended a point streak to seven games on the Bergenheim goal.
The Sound Tigers had entered the game on a 13 penalty-kill streak and were one second away from their fifth straight kill of the game when Mark Wotton blasted home his third goal of the year for the Bears to tie the score at 2-2 off assists from Boyd Kane and David Steckel with 3:28 left in the second period.
Sound Tigers goaltender Wade Dubielewicz, who stopped two second-period penalty shots Saturday in Hershey, kept Sunday's score tied with a highlight-reel save late in the middle frame when he dove to his left to rob Joey Tenute of what would have been the go-ahead goal for the Bears.
Hershey did score the go-ahead tally 1:27 into the third period when Chris Bourque zipped home his fifth goal of the season off assists from Eric Fehr and Dean Arsene to make it 3-2.
However, the Sound Tigers did not go away quietly, outshooting the Bears 8-6 in the final frame. They called timeout and pulled Dubielewicz in favor of an extra attacker with 1:32 left to play, but Hershey's Dave Steckel capped the win with his eighth goal of the year into the empty net with 53 seconds left to play off assists from Kane and Laich to make it 4-2.
Bourque was the first star of the game, Laich the second and Dubielewicz the third. The Bears were 1 for 5 on the power play, 4 for 4 on the penalty kill and had a 36-25 shots on goal advantage. Dubielewicz took the loss despite a 32-save effort while Frederic Cassivi notched his 13th win, second most in the AHL, with 23 stops.
The Sound Tigers will begin a three-game-in-three-day weekend when they host the Lowell Lock Monsters this coming Friday, December 16th at 7:35 p.m. Friday will be "Fairfield Town Night" and the Sound Tigers' annual Holiday Food Drive. After a road game versus the Hartford Wolf Pack on Saturday at 7 p.m., the Sound Tigers will host the Norfolk Admirals next Sunday, December 18th at 4:05 p.m. on "Shelton Town Night" and the annual "Teddy Bear Toss".
