Hershey Bears News Release

The BEARS stand poised to reach the 100-point plateau after a 3-2 win at home Saturday against the Philadelphia Phantoms. One point back of the first place Norfolk Admirals after the end of play Saturday night, HERSHEY can move into first place all by themselves with a win on Sunday.

HERSHEY opened the scoring with a goal from Matt Hendricks at 7:50 of the first period, with an assist from Jakub Klepis. The goal gave the BEARS a 1-0 lead until late in the first when the Phantoms would rally. Matt Ellison picked up a puck in the slot off a defenseman's skate and scored his 12th goal of the season at 17:45. HERSHEY outshot the Phantoms 13-9 in the first 20 minutes, with the game locked up at 1-1.

Both teams would battle back and fourth through the second period, with Joey Tenute breaking through late to give the BEARS the lead. Tenute's power play goal, from Chris Bourque and Kyle Wilson at 18:56, gave HERSHEY a 2-1 lead at second intermission. The BEARS also continued to pour on the shots in the middle stanza, firing 15 and allowing just seven.

With the BEARS on the power play to begin the third period, Philadelphia's Mark Cullen scored a short-handed goal to tie the game at 2-2. The goal came just 39 seconds into the third, but the Phantoms would not stay tied for long. Hendricks scored his second goal of the game and 17th of the season at 1:50 to score what proved to be the game-winning goal. Philadelphia's Matt Davis took a two-minute interference minor at 17:56 of the third, effectively ending the Phantoms' hopes of tying the contest. Maxime Daigneault won his 20th game of the season against just six regulation defeats.
