Iowa Chops News Release

DES MOINES, IA - The Iowa Stars welcomed the Milwaukee Admirals to Wells Fargo Arena for game three of a five game home-stand on Saturday night. Iowa was unable to push their winning-streak to five games, dropping a 3-0 decision to Milwaukee. The Admirals third goal came via an empty-net. The shutout loss was just the second time this season Iowa has failed to register a goal. Despite the loss, Iowa still has a one point lead over Peoria for the fourth playoff spot in the West Division.

After allowing the first four shots of the game to open the first period, the Stars were able to maintain most of the pressure for the remaining 10 minutes of play. Iowa rattled-off the next nine shots in the stanza to finish the physical period with a 12 to five shot advantage. The game remained scoreless thanks in part to a great poke-check play by Iowa netminder Dan Ellis early in the period.

The second period was more of the same with Iowa carrying a majority of the play in the middle stanza. The Stars out-shot the Admirals 13 to seven in the period but Milwaukee netminder Pekka Rinne was up to the challenge. The Admirals goalie made several key saves and denied Iowa on their two second period power-play chances.

Milwaukee came out of the second intermission with a bit of jump in their step. The Admirals out-shot the Stars seven to two in the first seven minutes of the period. Dan Ellis was able to keep the Ads off the board when he robbed Milwaukee's Pat Leahy at the 13:00 minute mark. A little over four minutes later, with Milwaukee on the power-play, Chris Durno was able to sneak behind the Iowa defenders and tap in a loose puck to give Milwaukee a 1-0 lead. Milwaukee grabbed a 2-0 lead at the 16:41 mark when the puck caromed off the end-wall, took a funny bounce and wound-up going in off of Ellis' leg pads. John Vigilante was credited with the game's second goal as the last Admirals player to touch the puck. With Ellis on the bench in favor of the extra attacker, Milwaukee's Brandon Segal sealed the victory with an empty-net goal with a little over two minutes left.
