HERSHEY, PA - Matt Hendricks scored two goals, including the game-winner, to lead the Hershey Bears to a 3-2 win over the Philadelphia Phantoms on Saturday night at the GIANT Center in Hershey. Matt Ellison and Mark Cullen scored for the Purple in the loss.
Hershey opened the scoring 7:50 into the first period. Hendricks carried a puck around the net from the left to the right and was able to fire it into an open right side before Scott Munroe could get back to cover, giving the Bears a 1-0 lead.
Philadelphia was able to tie the game with 2:15 remaining in the period. Pete Zingoni had a bid that hit a defenseman's skates in front and the rebound came right to Ellison. He snapped it high to the glove side of Daigneault for the 1-1 score.
Hershey took a 2-1 lead on a power play goal with 1:04 remaining in the second. Joey Tenute was on hand in the low slot to change the direction of a Chris Bourque slapshot from the right point and send it past Munroe.
The Bears were again on the power play when Cullen tied the game 39 seconds into the third period. He knocked a puck free at center ice and was on a breakaway when he was tripped from behind by Bourque just inside the Hershey blue line. Before the term "penalty shot" could settle in the minds of the onlookers, Cullen got back up, continued the breakaway and scored on Daigneault to make it a 2-2 game.
However, Hershey regained the one-goal advantage before that power play ended. Hendricks was chipping at a puck at the top of the Phantoms crease, and it ended up bouncing off a Philadelphia defenseman on the right post and past Munroe 1:50 into the period.
Munroe put forth a valiant effort, stopping 38 of 41 bids by Hershey. The only pucks that escaped his grasp eith came with his team a man down or in the case of the opening goal, on a delayed penalty. Daigneault earned the win with 21 saves on 23 Phantoms chances.
The Phantoms return home to host the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins on Sunday afternoon at 5:05. It's the annual Photo Night, where fans can get their photos taken with their favorite Phantoms on the ice following the game. Individual tickets for all Phantoms games, including $8 tickets for children 14 and under anywhere in the building, are on sale now at phantomshockey.com or by calling 800-298-4200.
