Peoria Rivermen News Release
Peoria , IL.- In a very physical and hard-fought game, the Peoria Rivermen earned a much needed two points to snap their three-game losing streak, defeating the Chicago Wolves 4-3 in a shootout in front of 6,011 at Carver Arena.
The winning tally came off the stick of left wing Charles Linglet in the final round of the shootout. Linglet skated into the slot, where he flinched to send Chicago goaltender Fred Brathwaite to the ice and then roofed a shot into the top left corner of the net.
The Wolves notched the first goal of the game at 7:07 of the opening period. Defenseman Brian Fahey attempted to take a shot from the high slot, but his stick was swatted by a Rivermen defenseman. The puck trickled toward the doorstep, where left wing Brett Sterling picked it up and slid it around the outstretched left leg of Rivermen netminder Chris Beckford-Tseu, who had committed to Fahey's attempt. It was Sterling's AHL-leading 51st marker of the season.
Peoria evened the game 1-1 at 16:14 of the first frame on left wing Michal Birner's 10 th tally of the season. Right wing Jon DiSalvatore shot the puck from the left face-off dot that hit the left side of the net and rolled into the left-wing corner. Birner gathered the puck and quickly skated around the net; once he reached the right post he fired a shot that deflected off of the skate of Brathwaite and into the net.
Just 14 seconds into the second session, the Rivermen took a 2-1 lead. While on a two-on-one breakaway with center Gavin Morgan, Linglet slid the puck from the right point to center point. Morgan collected the pass and skated to the left hash marks in the slot, where he blasted the puck into the upper right corner for his fourth marker of the year.
Peoria took a two-goal advantage at 13:38 of the second stanza. Defenseman Steve Wagner held the puck in the zone on a clearing attempt at the right point and dished it to center Ryan Ramsay, who returned to the line-up tonight after missing 11 games due to injury. From the right face-off circle, Ramsay sent a pass to right wing Jon DiSalvatore stationed at the right post, where he lifted the puck over the left pad of Brathwaite.
Chicago cut its deficit to 3-2 on Haydar's 37 th marker of the year just 1:19 later. Sterling raced through the slot then slid a pass to Haydar in the left face-off circle, where he snapped a shot that just slipped between the left post and right arm of Beckford-Tseu.
The Wolves tied the game late in the second period on a two-on-one breakaway opportunity while shorthanded. Defenseman Andy Delmore hurried down the right-wing boards and once he entered the zone, flipped a pass to center Cory Larose in the left face-off circle. Larose quickly tapped the puck back to Delmore, who had reached the bottom of the right face-off circle, where he easily deposited his 17th tally of the year.
Late in the third frame, Chicago had two separate man advantage opportunities, but the Rivermen defense and Beckford-Tseu denied any chance of a game-winning goal. Overall, Peoria killed all five penalties.
Unfortunately, the Rivermen were shut down on all of their man advantage chances (0 for 9), including three separate 5-on-3 power plays. One of those two-man advantages occurred during the overtime period for 1:06, but Peoria failed to register a goal and the game was sent into a shootout.
The Rivermen will take on the Chicago Wolves at the Allstate Arena on Sunday, March 25 for the final time in the regular season on the back end of a home-and-home weekend series. Game time is 3:00 p.m.
