Hershey Drops 6-2 Road Decision to Phantoms

(Allentown, PA) - The Hershey Bears traveled to Allentown for their first of six road meetings this season against the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, and dropped a 6-2 decision at PPL Center. Greg Carey finished the night with two goals and one assist against the Bears.

Beck Malenstyn opened the scoring for the Chocolate and White after his club continued to possess following an expired power play chance. At 3:38, Malenstyn scored on a sharp angle, rebound opportunity after an initial stop by Phantoms goaltender Carter Hart on Connor Hobbs. The primary assist for Hobbs' marked his team-leading 10th helper of the season. The Phantoms evened the score at 1-1 to enter first intermission tied. At 12:01, Mike Vecchione snapped a shot past Bears goaltender Ilya Samsonov after a cross-ice pass from Mikhail Vorobyev on the power play. Shots after 20 minutes were 11-7 Hershey.

Lehigh Valley grabbed control early in the second frame, and Greg Carey scored twice within 2:36 to provide his team a two-goal edge. First, Carey improved his team's power play to 2-for-2 on the night after a scoring chance immediately following a face-off. After the Phantoms won a draw in the Bears end, Samsonov dropped a Phil Varone shot and Nic Aube-Kubel slid a loose puck across to Carey for the easy tap in within the blue paint at 2:25.

At 5:01, Carey's second goal of the night also came courtesy of a clean face-off win. After Aube-Kubel won the draw, Carey immediately blasted a quick release past Samsonov to give Lehigh Valley a 3-1 lead. The Bears pulled within one before the second period expired off a slick transition goal by Jayson Megna. At 12:01, Megna raced along the right wing in a 3-on-1 rush and beat Hart on a low, blocker-side shot. Shots after 40 minutes were 22-17 Hershey.

Midway through the third period, Hart stoned Steven Whitney on a breakaway which proved to be a crucial moment in the hockey game. For the remainder of regulation, Lehigh Valley was in the drivers seat and scored three times in the stanza for a commanding 6-2 final. At 9:02, Philippe Myers unleashed a center-point drive past Samsonov seconds after a Phantoms power play expired. Phil Varone joined the scoring at 14:10 after finishing a sub-goal line pass from Carey to make the score 5-2. With 15 seconds left, Vorobyev finished a shorthanded breakaway chance after a neutral zone turnover to ice a 6-2 final.

The Bears finished the night 0-for-4 on the power play, 3-for-5 on the penalty and out shot Lehigh Valley, 30-29. The Hershey Bears return to action tomorrow, November 24 with a 7:05 p.m. tilt against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins at Mohegan Sun Arena.
