SYRACUSE - The Binghamton Devils were unable to complete a comeback tonight as the Syracuse Crunch held on for a 5-3 win at the War Memorial.
Syracuse scored 0:21 into the game to take a 1-0 lead and started a four-goal first period. From the left point, Gabriel Dumont fired a slap shot over the shoulder of goaltender Eddie Lack for his first of the year with assists from Hubert Labrie and Carter Verhaeghe.
The league's best power play came through twice in the opening frame to move the Crunch out to a 3-0 lead. Verhaeghe's power-play goal came 5:32 into the game and Cory Conachar's one timer on the man advantage came at 11:33 for the three goal lead.
Dumont struck again, this time shorthanded, to give the Crunch a 4-0 lead after one period. Dumont went around Colton White and beat Lack on a backhander at the 12:19 mark. Assists were given to Cameron Gaunce, his third of the period, and Michael Bournival. Binghamton trailed the Crunch by four goals after 20 minutes and were outshot, 11-6.
Binghamton responded with three goals in the second period to trail by one after 40 minutes of action. Colton White got the comeback started on the the power play as he sent a one timer from Blake Pietila over the right shoulder of goaltender Connor Ingram at 5:49.
Pietila got in on the scoring just over six minutes later to split the deficit in half. Nick Lappin found Pietila wide open in the hash marks and he left a wrist shot go that beat Ingram over the right shoulder for his sixth of the year. Lappin collected the lone helper and the goal came at 11:58 of the middle frame.
Marian Studenic move to the top of the rookie scoring race with his eighth of the year with 3:52 to go in the second. Studenic put the brakes on in the right wing circle and beat Ingram through the legs to pull the Devils within one goal after two periods with assists from Brandon Gignac and Colby Sissons.
In the third period, right as the Devils killed a late penalty against Eric Gryba, the Crunch scored to take a 5-3 lead and that was the final.
