Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

Nick Hernandez was just way too much for the Gary SouthShore RailCats.

Saturday night at Shaw Park, the Goldeyes left-handed ace threw a six-hit, complete-game shutout at the RailCats - the first nine-inning complete game of his professional career -- as the Fish whipped the visitors 10-0.

Hernandez had five strikeouts and only one walk as he dominated the visitors from the opening pitch.

With the win, the Goldeyes won the final game of the series and earned a split of this four-game set with the RailCats. The Goldeyes improved to 23-30 on the season, while the RailCats fell to 25-28.

"I just went out there to pound the strike zone," said Hernandez afterward. "That team likes to take you deep in counts and make you throw 100 pitches by the fifth inning and then beat up your bullpen. They've been doing it for a lot of years and I wanted to make sure they didn't do it to us tonight.

"So I tried to bust them inside and I was able to make them hit my pitches. It's the first complete game I've ever thrown as a professional. I think I've had a couple of seven-inning complete games, but that's the first time I've ever had a nine-inning complete game. At no time during the game did I think I wouldn't finish that one. Every time I start a game, I'm thinking about going all nine innings and that's the way I felt out there tonight."

With Hernandez dealing, the Goldeyes hitters responded. They scored two runs in the first as Casio Grider was safe on an error and scored on a double by Casey Haerther. Haerther came home three batters later on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Josh Mazzola.

Haerther hit a solo home in the third inning and then the Goldeyes blew it open with four in the fourth. With one out, Adam Heisler walked and went to second on a bunt single by Casio Grider, Both runners moved up an extra base on an error by Gary pitcher Rene Solis and then both runners scored on a two-run single by Haerther. Haerther came home on a double by Brad Boyer and then Boyer scored on an RBI single by Josh Mazzola.

With the score 7-0, the Goldeyes added three more in the sixth with some two-out magic. Newcomer Reggie Abercrombie singled and stole second. Then Boyer walked and Mazzola doubled home Abercrombie. Nic Jackson then singled home Boyer and Mazzola and the Goldeyes had all they needed.

Mazzola finished with three hits, a run scored and four RBI, while Haerther had three hits, including a home run, with three runs scored and four driven in. Abercrombie played centre field in his first game back with the Goldeyes and went two-for-four with a run scored. Grider and Jackson also had multi-hit games.

Hernandez (7-2, 1.77 ERA) earned the win, while Rene Solis (1-6, 4.41 ERA) was tagged with the loss. It was a wild four-game set. The Goldeyes scored 30 runs on 49 hits and had two starting pitchers throw six- and nine-inning shutouts and yet they split the series.

The Goldeyes immediately got on the bus following the game and started driving toward St. Paul, Minn. The Fish and St. Paul Saints will open a four-game series on Sunday at 5 p.m. at the new CHS Field in downtown St. Paul. Right=hander Matt Jackson (3-6, 4.90 ERA) will get the start for Winnipeg, while Kramer Sneed (9-1, 2.56 ERA) will take to the bump for St. Paul.

The game can be heard live on The Jewel 100.5 with Steve Schuster at the microphone.

The Goldeyes play their next eight games on the road in St. Paul and Kansas City and will not return home until Wedensday, July 29 when the Amarillo ThunderHeads play at Shaw Park.Tickets for all Goldeyes home games in 2015 are available through Ticketmaster by clicking on Goldeyes.com, calling 1-855-GOLDEYE or visiting any Ticketmaster location, including the Shaw Park box office.
