Indianapolis Indians News Release

INDIANAPOLIS -- Infielder Anderson Hernandez has been named the Indianapolis Indians Player of the Month for the month of July. Hernandez will accept the award -- which includes a custom-made watch from Windsor Jewelry -- prior to Thursday's game against the Charlotte Knights.

The switch-hitting native of the Dominican Republic batted .303 (30-for-99) with three doubles, three triples, one home run, 15 RBI and 12 runs scored during the month. His July batting average tied for the second-highest on the team with 1B/DH Jeff Clement, trailing only 1B/DH Matt Hague, who hit .337.

Hernandez also tied for the team-lead in games played (28) with SS Chase d'Arnaud. A versatile defender, Hernandez played 23 games at second base during the month while also seeing time at third base (one game), shortstop (two games) and left field (one game).

The 29-year-old journeyman is in his first season in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization but has seen major league playing time with the New York Mets, Washington Nationals, Cleveland Indians and Houston Astros. As of August 8, Hernandez has batted .270 in 89 games for Indianapolis this season, totaling eight doubles, five triples, one home run, 34 RBI, 40 runs scored and two stolen bases.

Thursday's game is scheduled for a 7:05 p.m. start and wraps up a four-game series against the Charlotte Knights. Starting Friday, the Tribe sets off on a twelve-day, three city roadtrip before returning the Victory Field on Aug. 22 to start a six-game homestand against division-rivals Louisville and Columbus.

Tickets for all Tribe home games are available by going online to IndyIndians.com, calling the Indians single game ticket hotline at 317-269-2282 or by visiting the Victory Field Box Office, open daily at 501 West Maryland Street.
