Knights No-Hit by Indians in Rain-Shortened Game on Thursday
August 9, 2012 - International League (IL1)
Charlotte Knights News Release
(Indianapolis, IN) - The Charlotte Knights and Indianapolis Indians concluded their series on Thursday by making history.
Indianapolis starter Justin Wilson threw a rain-shortened eight inning no-hitter against the Charlotte Knights and the Indians won the game 3-0 in the finale of their four-game series from Victory Field on Thursday.
Besides the rain, a one-out walk in the seventh inning by Dewayne Wise was the only blemish on Wilson's night.
With the Knights down 3-0 and Wilson needing just one inning to complete his no-hitter, the game was delayed due to rain before the start of the bottom of the eighth inning. After a :50-minute delay, the game was called and Wilson had an eight-inning no-hitter against the Knights.
It was the first and only win of the series for the Indians, who dropped three of four to Charlotte in the battle of two first place teams. While Thursday's meeting was the final scheduled meeting of the regular season, the two teams could meet in the playoffs next month.
With both teams currently leading their respective divisions, if the season were to end today, the two teams would meet in the first round of the Governors' Cup playoffs.
Wilson (9-5, 3.88) struck out five batters en route to making Indianapolis and International League history on Thursday. The Indians scored a run in the fifth inning and a run in the sixth off of Knights starter Scott Carroll (2-5, 5.49), who was the hard-luck loser.
The Knights will now make the trek back to Fort Mill for an eight-game homestand beginning on Friday. The first place Knights are set to host second place Norfolk in game one of an important four-game series at 7:15 p.m. RHP Charlie Shirek is expected to start for the Knights, while Norfolk will send LHP Brian Matusz to the hill. Gates open at 6:00 p.m. on Friday.
