Frederick Keys News Release

ZEBULON, NC. - A late rally by the Frederick Keys (28-28) fell short as the Carolina Mudcats (32-25) took a 7-4 contest on Monday night at Five County Stadium. The Mudcats hit three home runs, including two from Mario Feliciano who leads the Carolina League with 11 long balls. Meanwhile, Nelson Hernandez (6-3) gave Carolina their second-consecutive quality start, lasting 6.1 innings with six strikeouts. The loss brings the Keys back even at .500.

Trailing 7-2 in the ninth, the Keys loaded the bases with one-out for Yusneil Diaz, who singled in a run and kept the bases juiced. Willy Yahn then hit a ground ball to short but broke up the double-play which allowed a run to score to make it 7-4. Yahn represented the tying run for Frederick but Clayton Andrews finished off the ninth to preserve the win for Carolina.

The Keys took an early 1-0 thanks to a sacrifice fly from Jean Carrillo in the second inning but the Mudcats answered immediately. Feliciano led off the home half of the frame with his first home run of the night to tie the ball game while Payton Henry and Rob Henry followed with back-to-back base hits to put runners at the corner.

Dillon Tate then struck out Pat McInerney for the first out and forced Eddie Silva to hit into a field's choice that scored a run to give Carolina a 2-1 lead. Tate was pulled after that as his pitch count neared 40 pitches. It was his first outing since he was placed on the injured list back on April 30. He allowed three hits and two runs (one earned) while striking out three.

Frederick tied the game 2-2 in the third inning on Jomar Reyes' RBI double, but Feliciano slugged his second dinger to start the bottom of the fourth and put the Mudcats back on top 3-2. Carolina added another run in the inning on a wild pitch from Matthias Dietz with the bases loaded.

Dietz (1-6) came in relief of Tate in the second inning. He faced the minimum through the third but gave up the home run in the fourth, hit two batters and walked a pair before escaping the frame after two runs crossed. Dietz walked four, hit three batters and let loose two wild pitches while allowing two runs on two hits over three innings.

In the sixth inning, Silva hit a solo home run to make it 5-2 and the Mudcats added two more in the seventh on Rob Henry's RBI double and a fielding error that allowed a run to score.

Scott Burke finished the final 3.1 frames and was charged with two earned runs on four hits. Andrews relieved Phil Bickford in the ninth inning and picked up his seventh save.

The Keys and Mudcats conclude their three-game series on Tuesday, June 4 before a scheduled off-day for Frederick. LHP Cameron Bishop (0-3, 3.86) takes the mound opposite RHP Matt Smith (1-5, 4.50) for Carolina. First pitch is slated for 7:00pm.
