Hawks Win Third Straight, 5-2 Over TC

February 5, 2024 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Portland Winterhawks News Release

Portland, Ore. - Five consecutive goals in the first 40 minutes and a 27-save showing from rookie goaltender Luke Brunen helped the Winterhawks complete a perfect three-in-three weekend with a 5-2 win over the Tri-City Americans on Sunday. Portland has scored a stunning 23 goals in its last three games, all coming this weekend.

The Winterhawks have won four consecutive contests and their record now stands at 34-12-2-1 on the year (71pts, 1st Western Conference).

Portland kicked off another offensive onslaught just 3:34 into the contest as Luca Cagnoni wired a wrister into the top corner on the power play. With that goal, Cagnoni moved into the top 10 in goals among all-time Winterhawks defensemen - just one week after doing the same in both assists and points. The Hawks then tacked on two more before the end of the frame for a 3-0 lead. Marek Alscher showed off his power move for the second time this week, cutting to the slot at 11:13 and tucking in his own rebound, then Kyle Chyzowski took a Josh Zakreski pass in front and patiently wrapped it past Lukas Matecha's outstretched leg.

Tyson Jugnauth resumed festivities in the second period, showing off his elusive skating abilities and quick-release wrister to score for the third straight game at 6:19. The game went goalless for a while after that, but Portland captain Gabe Klassen brought the home crowd to its feet in the final minute of the frame with a deflection of James Stefan's shot from distance.

Jordan Gavin and Carter MacAdams got Tri-City on the board in the third, but once again, the Winterhawks were able to cruise to victory.

The Winterhawks will host the Seattle Thunderbirds next Saturday, Feb. 10, at 6:00 P.M. for Black Hockey History Night in the VMC.
