Hawks' Streak Snapped Friday

December 1, 2023 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

The Sioux Falls Stampede scored the first three goals, generating enough offense in the first half of Friday's game to outdistance the Waterloo Black Hawks at Young Arena by an eventual final of 4-2.

The loss ended a four-game Hawks winning streak. It is the second time this season that Waterloo has been denied in a bid to win five consecutive games.

The Stampede scored the first period's lone goal with 46.5 seconds left before intermission. Beckett Hendrickson chased down a puck at the Hawks' blue line, striding into the zone before centering for J.J. Wiebusch. Sioux Falls' leading scorer flipped the feed past Calvin Vachon.

The Stampede then found the net twice in the second; the goals were exactly four minutes apart. Chris Pelosi stole the puck for an unassisted wraparound tally four-on-four at 5:04. Then Jaksen Panzer finished a chance to make it 3-0 on a rush where all three Sioux Falls forwards touched the puck.

Waterloo went to a mid-period power play, which included a minute of five-on-three time. They didn't score on the two-man advantage, but John Mustard did find the net. Despite being tripped as he moved up the slot, Mustard was still able to sweep in a chance from one knee at 11:45.

The Hawks avoided falling further behind despite Stampede power plays late in the second and early in the third. That left an opportunity to draw back within a goal at 11:14 of the final period. Jakub Altrichter's shot from the left circle created a rebound which Gavyn Thoreson banged in from the top of the crease.

However, Waterloo could not convert a late power play for an equalizer. Instead, Hendrickson scored the final goal into an empty net from center ice with 1:26 left.

The Hawks go on the road Saturday to visit the Des Moines Buccaneers.
