Hawks Set Road Record

October 11, 2013 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

A strong performance on the power play helped the Waterloo Black Hawks set a junior-era franchise record Friday with a 5-1 victory against the Lincoln Stars at the Icebox.

The Hawks went four-for-ten on the advantage, and in the process won their eighth consecutive regular season road game dating back to last season. The franchise's previous best was a string of seven consecutive scheduled wins outside the Cedar Valley in 1984.

Changing gears quickly from defense to offense, the Hawks opened the scoring at 3:26 of the first period, seconds after killing a Lincoln power play. Peter Krieger steamed up left wing and snapped a shot into the net off of goaltender Nick Schmit. Waterloo power plays resulted in two more goals during the period; Patrick Russell stuffed in an opportunity at 13:01 just before the net became dislodged during a two-man advantage, followed in short order by a Brandon Montour special teams strike at 13:36.

The Hawks' power play efforts continued in the second. At 8:44, Zach Sanford banged a rebound out of midair and into the goal. However, after a subsequent Lincoln penalty was successfully killed, David Parrottino came up left wing and snapped a long chance over the right shoulder of Cal Petersen.

One more five-on-three goal in the third capped the scoring. Drew Melanson jammed in his second in as many games since joining the Hawks with 4:41 remaining in regulation.

Petersen claimed his third win of the season, making 26 saves.

The Hawks continue their trip to Nebraska Saturday evening with a visit to the Tri-City Storm. Game time is 7:05; fans can tune in for radio pregame coverage on 1650, The Fan, beginning at 6:45 or watch the game live on the internet via FastHockey.
