Lancers Set USHL Record with Fourth Straight Shutout
October 11, 2013 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Omaha Lancers News Release
RALSTON, NE - In their second straight clash versus the defending regular season Western Conference champion Sioux Falls Stampede, the Omaha Lancers gutted out a tight-checking 2-0 win on Friday at Ralston Arena, the team's fourth consecutive shutout victory to start their 28th season in the United States Hockey League (USHL), a new all-time league record for consecutive shutouts. With the victory, the Lancers improved to 4-0-0 on the season and with eight points, currently sit tied atop the USHL's Western Conference standings.
Terrific goaltending from both Cole Bruns of the Lancers and Stampede netminder David Jacobson highlighted the first two periods of play but it wasn't until 4:41 of the final frame that either team broke the ice. After an intentionally inaccurate point shot from Omaha blueliner Matt Nelson, a funky carom ended up on the stick of Lancer winger Luca Frigo who banked his fourth goal of the season off Jacobson from below the goal line to make it 1-0 Lancers with future Union College Dutchman and Lancers Assistant Captain Tyler Hynes picking up an assist on the play.
Then at 13:31, a four-minute high-sticking double minor for Brian Williams looked to spell doom and gloom for the Lancer lead, but a perseverant shorthanded forechecking effort from Lancers leading-scorer Jake Randolph resulted in a back-door tally for Omaha rookie Tyler Vesel, the future Nebraska-Omaha forward's fourth goal of the season, making it 2-0 Lancers.
With his 28 Friday saves, Bruns has now stopped each of the first 89 shots he's faced in the 2013-14 season and the Lancers' penalty-kill, a cool 13-for-13 to start the season entering Friday's game against Sioux Falls, effectively neutralized all six of the man-down scenarios they faced on Friday to maintain a perfect 100% kill rate on the season.
Next up for the Lancers, it's a Saturday showdown with the Des Moines Buccaneers with the opening faceoff set for 7:05 pm at Ralston Arena. Full coverage of Saturday's action begins with the "Valpak Pregame Show" at 6:50 pm on the Lancers' flagship station, "The Mighty" 1290 KOIL, with Lancers broadcaster Tony Brown providing the play-by-play.
In 2013-14, the five-time Anderson Cup and seven-time Clark Cup Champion Omaha Lancers drop the puck on their 28th season in the USHL. Season ticket packages for the Lancers' second campaign at the state-of-the-art Ralston Arena are available now starting at just $12.50 per game!
