Hawks Roll in Overtime

Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Michael Davies scored with under a minute remaining in overtime Saturday, giving the Waterloo Black Hawks a 3-2, come-from-behind win against the Fargo Force at Young Arena.

After taking a handoff from Nick Swaney near the offensive blue line, Davies moved into the high slot, hesitated as the puck went on edge, then snapped a low shot past Ryan Wischow at 6:19. It was Davies' third point of the game.

It had looked like the Black Hawks were out of time to break a scoreless deadlock in the first period. On the power play, Swaney used just about all of the time available to feed a pass across the low slot. David Cotton punched it by Wischow with one touch from below the right wing circle with just 0.2 seconds remaining.

Special teams smiled on the Force in the second. During Fargo's third power play of the night, Denis Smirnov was skating to his left across the deep slot before shooting back to his right, putting the chance through traffic and into the top corner at 10:54.

The teams exchanged goals in the third, beginning with another Fargo power play score at 6:57. After a first chance was blocked, the Force set up a second one-timer for Jarod Hilderman, and the defenseman blasted the chance into the net from the left circle. Waterloo leveled the score with 7:13 left in regulation. Davies' shot from the left point was tipped by Swaney standing just outside the crease, redirecting the puck up under the crossbar.

At the end of regulation, each team had 31 shots on goal. In overtime, the Hawks put seven chances on frame while allowing only two. Drew Hotte made 31 saves in the win.

Waterloo concludes the pre-Christmas portion of the schedule against the Youngstown Phantoms in the Mahoning Valley next Friday and Saturday.
