South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
South Bend, IN - Despite being outhit nine-to-five and short on bullpen arms, the South Bend Silver Hawks grinded out a 3-2 victory over the Lansing Lugnuts Thursday night at Coveleski Stadium. The victory puts South Bend in a tie atop the second half standings with the Great Lakes Loons.
Trailing 2-1 entering the sixth, the Silver Hawks scored two runs off Lansing starter Ryan Tepera (LP, 7-3) to take the lead for good. Keon Broxton struck out leading off the inning but advanced to first on a dropped third strike. Bobby Borchering and Matt Davidson later walked to load the bases for Ramon Castillo. Castillo singled to drive home Broxton and extend his hitting streak to eight, giving him at least one hit in every game he's played for South Bend. Alberto Diaz hit a sacrifice fly to plate Borchering and put South Bend up 3-2.
From there, Yonata Ortega (SV, 16) shut down the Lugnuts. Ortega entered the game early due to a shortage of available arms in the bullpen and threw 3.0 scoreless innings to earn the save. He allowed only one hit while striking out one during the long outing.
Scottie Allen (WP, 3-2) rebounded from a rough outing against Great Lakes with 6.0 innings of two-run ball for the victory. With South bend up 1-0, Allen allowed a RBI single to Chris Hopkins in the fifth to tie the game. In the sixth, Ryan Goins scored on a sacrifice fly to give Lansing the lead before Allen struck out Balbino Fuenmayor with the bases loaded to end the threat. Allen recorded nine strikeouts on the evening, setting a career high.
South Bend took the lead early with a lone tally in the first. Keon Broxton was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and later stole second with two outs. Davidson drove home Broxton with a two-out single to left-center, putting South Bend up 1-0. The Silver Hawks have now outscored opponents 38-30 in the first inning.
The Silver Hawks continue the three-game series with the Lansing Lugnuts (Toronto Blue Jays) Friday night at 7:30 PM with Fourth of July Fireworks to follow once again. South Bend's RHP Brad Gemberling (2-4, 4.60 ERA) will throw against RHP Ryan Shopshire (4-6, 5.42 ERA) of Lansing. Pregame coverage begins at 7:10 PM Eastern Time on 1620 ESPN Radio and online at www.silverhawks.com.
