Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Waterloo, Iowa-As the National Hockey League's 2012 Draft continued in Pittsburgh Saturday morning, Waterloo Black Hawks affiliate prospect Zach Stepan was picked by the Nashville Predators.
The choice for the Hastings, Minnesota, native was made with the 112th overall pick; it was the 21st selection during the fourth round.
Stepan, 5-11 and 165-pounds, was the 10th overall choice by Waterloo during the 2010 USHL Futures Draft. In the same first round, the Hawks also acquired Vince Hinostroza and A.J. Michaelson. Stepan has spent the last two seasons with Shattuck-St. Mary's, the same school which produced Waterloo's Taylor Cammarata and Ian McCoshen. In 2011-2012, he recorded 22 goals and 43 assists in 50 games. Zach Stepan's cousin, Derek, is currently a member of the New York Rangers after skating at Shattuck. NHL Central Scouting slotted the younger forward 53rd in the final pre-draft rankings posted in April.
The Predators developed former Black Hawk captain Craig Smith from draft day 2009 to opening day 2011. He was one of three former Waterloo skaters to make his NHL debut last season. Defenseman Mark Eaton also spent five seasons with the Predators from 2000 through 2006.
