Hawks Fall, Dodge Shutout
December 4, 2021 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
James Hong scored with just 0.3 seconds remaining, but there wasn't time left for the Waterloo Black Hawks to produce an equalizer in a 2-1 Saturday night loss to the Sioux Falls Stampede at Young Arena.
Hong notched the lone Waterloo goal when the puck squirted to him out of a scrum near the front of the Stampede net. It was his second goal in as many nights - both from nearly the same spot on the ice - after he had scored Friday in the Hawks' 5-2 victory versus Sioux Falls.
Noah Grannon stopped 35 other Black Hawks chances, including 22 in the third period.
The Stampede had the game's first six shots on goal and an 11-6 edge in opportunities by the time the period was over. The visitors also had the lone goal during the frame, coming at 16:50 when Garrett Pinoniemi set up Maddox Fleming near the top of the right circle. Fleming waited for traffic to congregate, then sent a shot to the top corner.
The score held through the second period. Hong had the best chance to tie the game, speeding up the ice on a shorthanded breakaway during the final minute before intermission, but Grannon parried away Hong's low shot.
Still trailing 1-0, Waterloo pulled Jack Williams with 2:57 remaining, generating a number of six-on-five shots on goal and missing the net with a few more. Dan Russell scored an empty-netter - ultimately the game-winner - from the neutral zone at 18:21.
Williams absorbed the loss despite turning away 26 of 27 shots he faced.
The Black Hawks play their last home game before Christmas next Friday at 7:05 p.m. against the Des Moines Buccaneers. Santa Claus will be in attendance. To order seats, visit tickets.waterlooblackhawks.com or call the Domino's Black Hawks Box Office at (319) 291-7680.
