Saints Split with Steel Saturday

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The Dubuque Fighting Saints' four-game winning streak has ended. The Chicago Steel scored five of the final six goals of the game and capitalized on their scoring chances to hand the Fighting Saints a 6-3 defeat on Saturday night at the Mystique Community Ice Center.

While the Fighting Saints had a 2-1 lead after the first period and got within a goal of the Steel early in the third period, it was Chicago's precision, specifically in the second period, that made the difference. Chicago scored on 3 of their 8 shots on the second period, even while being outshot 13-8 in the middle frame of regulation time.

Jayden Perron, Lukas Gustafsson and Jackson Blake all scored in the second period to go from 2-1 down to 4-2 ahead after two periods of play. Blake hobbled off the ice injured a shift before returning and taking a breakaway dish to give Chicago a two-goal cushion heading into the room with under five minutes to play in the second period.

Dubuque was unable to capitalize on an early 5-on-3 power play opportunity early in the second period.

The Fighting Saints utilized an early power play to slice the lead to one. Axel Kumlin led a pass across ice to Lucas Ölvestad, whose one-timer got past goaltender Christian Manz to get the score to 4-3. However, Chicago got the goal back at the halfway point of the period on a tally by Nick Moldenhauer.

Joe Miller added a goal into the empty net with goaltender Philip Svedebäck pulled for the extra attacker.

Gabriel Lundberg got the scoring party started for the Fighting Saints in the first period. His goal at 12:38 from a severe angle slipped between Manz's pads and led to a cascade of stuffed animals falling from the skies. It tied the game at one, after Luke Levandowski opened the scoring for Chicago within the opening five minutes of the period.

All stuffed animal donations will be donated to Toys for Tots in Dubuque.

Lundberg added another goal just three minutes later. Riley Stuart added his second assist on the night on zone entry, and Lundberg ripped a shot past Manz to give the Fighting Saints a 2-1 lead.

The Fighting Saints outshot the Steel 32-19 for the game.
