Stampede Top Black Hawks to Earn Weekend Split
December 4, 2021 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Sioux Falls Stampede News Release
Waterloo, IA - The Sioux Falls Stampede survived a late third period surge from the Waterloo Black Hawks to earn a 2-1 victory at Young Arena on Saturday night and a weekend split against the Hawks. Noah Grannan was 0.3 seconds away from his second straight shutout, but Waterloo scored just before the horn to ruin his shutout bid. Maddox Fleming scored in the first period and Dan Russell added an empty netter in the second to help lead the Herd to their fourth win in their last five games and 8-11-0 overall, just one point back of sixth place in the West.
The Stampede were looking for revenge and made a statement in the first period, outshooting the Black Hawks 11-6. Sioux Falls controlled play much of the period and their hard work would be rewarded at 16:50 when Garrett Pinoniemi sent a pass into the slot for Maddox Fleming who blasted a shot under the crossbar and into the net for a 1-0 Stampede advantage, a lead they would take into the locker room.
After a scoreless second period in which the Stampede outshot the Black Hawks 9-7, the third period was crazy as Waterloo brought everything they had at the Stampede, but Grannan was outstanding between the pipes for the Stampede after seeing 23 shots in the period. Waterloo had the Stampede a little flustered at times, but Grannan remained calm knocking down shot after shot and frustrating the Waterloo offense. With the Black Hawks goaltender pulled, Dan Russell slipped out of the zone and to the center line where he sent a shot perfectly into the net to make it a 2-0 game with just over a minute remaining. The Hawks would pull their goaltender again and score in the final second to ruin the shutout bid for Grannan.
Waterloo outshot the Stampede 23-8 in the third period and 36-28 on the night while going 0-for-1 on the power play and stopping both Stampede power play attempts.
The Stampede return to action next weekend with three games in three days starting Friday in Sioux City against the Musketeers. Saturday, the Herd host Tri-City at 6:05 PM for Dash for Cash Night, presented by CU Mortgage and close out the weekend on Sunday with a 4:05 PM game against Tri-City for Teddy Bear Toss night, presented by Jersey Mike's.
