USHL Waterloo Black Hawks

Hawks Break out for 6-3 Win

April 9, 2021 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Owen Ozar scored the first and last Waterloo Black Hawks goals Friday, with his teammates adding four others in between during a 6-3 Friday win at Young Arena versus the Sioux Falls Stampede.

It was the Hawks' highest scoring night in nearly a month, equaling the output from a 6-2 win against the Lincoln Stars on March 13th. Friday's performance also ended a five-game losing streak, which had included a total of just six Hawks tallies.

Two successful rushes gave Waterloo a 2-0 lead in the first. Ozar opened the scoring at 6:11, finding a way to push the puck across the goal line as it looked like he was attempting to make a pass across the top of the crease. The Hawks struck again at 12:27 when Michael LaStarza fed Casey Severo for a difficult backhander over Trent Burnham's left shoulder.

The game opened up in the second as each team had substantial power play time and combined to put 34 shots on net. Sioux Falls was the first to score with Nate Schweitzer firing from the right circle and rattling his shot in off the opposite post at 1:01.

The Hawks went back ahead by two at 5:45; Jacob Jeannette was stationed at the front of the net, getting a piece of a Severo shot which Burnham never saw as the puck arced above crossbar level before falling down and in.

LaStarza spun another chance into the net at 11:32 during the opening half of a four-minute power play. However, during the latter two minutes, Luke Toporowski came up the ice to rifle a shot to the top corner for a shorthanded goal at 13:21.

Max Sasson struck 2:30 into the third, capitalizing on a breakaway; it was a quick reversal after the Stampede had come up empty in transition moments earlier. Sasson also had a hand in the goal which gave the Hawks their largest lead of the night at 8:43, sliding a pass diagonally across the slot to Ozar, who banged it into an open side.

Cole Silinger produced a final Stampede goal during a power play at 10:46.

Emmett Croteau made 32 saves for the victory. Waterloo's rookie goalie had picked up his first USHL win in the most recent previous meeting between the Hawks and Stampede on January 9th.

Waterloo and Sioux Falls square off again Saturday at 6:05 p.m. The Hawks' 2021 John Deere jerseys will be auctioned after the game to benefit Cedar Valley United Way.
