
Stampede Drop Weekend Opener to Waterloo

WATERLOO, Iowa - The Sioux Falls Stampede dropped the opening game of a two-game, weekend series against the Waterloo Black Hawks 6-3 at Young Arena Friday night. Nate Schweitzer, Luke Toporowski and Cole Sillinger scored for the Herd in the loss. Trent Burnham made the start in net.
The Waterloo Black Hawks opened the scoring with the first two goals of the contest from Owen Ozar at 6:11 and Casey Severo at 12:27 of the first period.
Defensemen Nate Schweitzer and affiliate Max Rud combined to cut the deficit in half with a goal in the opening 1:01 of the second period. The eighth goal of the season for Colorado College commit Schweitzer.
Waterloo responded with the next two goals from Jacob Jeannette and Michael LaStarza at 5:45 and 11:32 for the 4-1 lead. Luke Toporowski responded for the Herd by taking a deflected shot end-to-end for a short-handed goal at 13:21 of the second period.
Max Sasson and Ozar finished the scoring for the Black Hawks, and Cole Sillinger collected his twenty-third goal of the season at 10:46 for the final 6-3 score. Trent Burnham made the start in net, stopping 29 of 35 shots, and assisted on the Sillinger goal for his first career league point.
The Herd has officially dropped out of playoff contention with the Sioux City Musketeers win tonight. The team will finish the season series tomorrow night in Waterloo with a 6:05 p.m. puck drop.
