Havens Homers Twice, B-Mets Lose Third Straight 8-5

Reese Havens smashed a pair of opposite field homers off Bowie starter Chorye Spoone and drove in three runs, but Binghamton dropped its third straight game 8-5 at Prince George's Stadium Wednesday night. Havens accounted for half of the B-Mets six hits and scored three of their five runs.

Havens got Binghamton (24-28) onto the board in the first inning with the first of his homers, a solo shot to left-center.

In the third, Omir Santos reached base on an error by second baseman Ryan Adams to open the frame. After Spoone retired Kirk Nieuwenhuis, the righty served up another long ball to Havens, a two-run shot to left-center, upping the lead to 3-0.

B-Mets starter Brad Holt had tiptoed in and out of trouble through the first three innings, walking three men without permitting a run. That changed in the fourth. After Holt put Robbie Widlansky on with a walk, Tyler Henson drove a 2-0 fastball from the big righty over the wall in right-center for his fourth homer of the year, cutting the lead to one. Holt retired the next three hitters to maintain Binghamton's 3-2 advantage.

In the fifth, however, Holt would again walk the leadoff hitter, Adams, resulting in his departure. Eddie Kunz replaced Holt for his second appearance out of the bullpen since being removed from the starting rotation. After inducing a flyout from Caleb Joseph, Kunz allowed six straight to reach courtesy of three hits and three walks, vaulting Bowie (28-25) into the lead 6-3.

Roy Merritt spelled the erratic righty and allowed a seventh straight man to reach when Jonathan Tucker singled to left, plating the seventh and final run of the inning. Kunz was charged with four runs over a third of an inning and took the loss.

Binghamton filled the bases with one out in the eighth against lefty Mike Hinckley, but managed just one run on a Marshall Hubbard groundout, moving the B-Mets within three.

The Baysox responded with a run in the bottom of the same frame. Joel Guzman lined his third hit of the night, a single, into left to plate Tucker, who had led off the inning with a double off reliever Manuel Alvarez.

With the lead back at four, the B-Mets did not roll over and give in. The first three hitters of the ninth reached against Ryan Ouellette, resulting in a run. With the tying run at the plate and nobody out, Ouellette was pulled in favor of Pat Egan. The hardthrowing righty nailed down his fourth save in as many chances, retiring the next three hitters in order, including two strikeouts.

Spoone recorded his fourth straight quality start with six innings of three-run work for his fourth win. Holt did not factor in the decision after allowing three earned runs and a season-high five walks over four-plus innings.

Binghamton looks to salvage the final game of the series Thursday night at 7:05 PM. The B-Mets will send LHP Mike Antonini (3-4, 4.66) to the hill and will be countered by Bowie RHP Ryohei Tanaka (3-5, 4.34).
