New Britain Rock Cats News Release
New Britain, CT - The Rock Cats have struggled for a good part of the 2010 season, and hosting Altoona - the team with the Eastern League's best record (35-18) - did little to improve their baseball fortunes today.
The Curve pounded out 16 Hits, including 3 long Home Runs, to beat the Rock Cats today before the 8th Sellout crowd of the year at New Britain Stadium.
With a gathering of 7,482 on hand for the popular 10:35 AM first pitch, the Rock Cats took a quick 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when their top hitter, Ben Revere, rapped an RBI single to plate Brandon Roberts, who had reached after being struck in the head by a pitch leading off the game. It was New Britain's only hit until Revere began the sixth inning with his second safety of the day. That single inspired a small uprising as - after a base on balls to Juan Portes - Erik Lis rifled a double into the RF corner to score both runners.
New Britain's offensive flurry turned out to be too-little-too-late as the League's top hitting team had already blasted two of their three round trippers on the day to take a 7-1 lead. The first of Altoona C Hector Gimenez' long HRs came in the 3rd inning off New Britain starter and loser, Carlos Gutierrez. Gimenez' next blast - his 11th of the year - was surrendered by Rock Cats' reliever Chris Province in the 8th. Gutierrez, who allowed 10 hits in 5 full innings of work, also served a 2-Run shot to Curve First Baseman Matt Hague in the 5th. With today's outcome, Gutierrez' 2010 record dipped to 2-4.
Altoona's southpaw starter, Justin Wilson, was solid over 5.2 innings to even his record at 4-4. He allowed 3 Hits and 3 Runs while Striking Out 6.
The Rock Cats scored their final 2 Runs in the 8th inning, when Steve Singleton hit a RBI sac fly before Chris Cates' RBI single finished the scoring for New Britain.
Gimenez responded for Altoona in the 9th inning with an RBI double - his fourth hit and 5th RBI of the day.
