Aeros Game Notes

June 2, 2010 - Eastern League (EL1)
Akron RubberDucks News Release

Joyous June... The Aeros defeated the Erie SeaWolves 5-3 Tuesday at Canal Park, beginning the month of June on a solid note. A crowd of 1,568 at Canal Park saw Akron take the first game of this quick three-game home stand against the Wolves because of an excellent relief effort by Paolo Espino. The Aeros trailed 3-1 when left-handed starter Nick Hagadone exited after his four-inning Double-A debut. In the bottom of the fifth, the Akron offense awakened as a Jerad Head run-scoring single cut the deficit to one. Left fielder John Drennen then delivered the go-ahead base knock on a smashing two-out double to the right field wall, giving the hosts their first lead of the game at 4-3. Shortstop Carlos Rivero plated the final run with an RBI single in the eighth to score designated hitter Matt McBride. Espino (6-2) earned the win by allowing one hit with seven strikeouts in five shutout innings and Erie starter Brooks Brown (3-3) took the loss by permitting four runs in his six frames.

Electric Espino... The normally scheduled starter was the hero in relief as Espino's performance was the key in the series opening victory Tuesday at Canal Park. Espino, a 23-year-old Panama native, has clearly been the most consistent Aeros pitcher this season and he now has a 5-2 record and a 2.36 ERA in his last eight outings dating back to April 27 at Altoona. He currently leads all qualified Akron pitchers this year in innings pitched (57.1), strikeouts (48), wins (six) and opponent batting average (.214)

Uno Más... Third baseman Jared Goedert collected yet another hit Tuesday against the Wolves, pushing him on the brink of Akron Aeros history. Goedert has now hit safely in 21 consecutive games dating back to May 10 at Erie and this streak is the longest mark in Double-A this year. He remains one game away from tying the 22-game franchise record set both by Dave Roberts (1998) and James Betzsold (1997). The 25-year-old Goedert is batting .370 (27-75) over the course of this stretch with 10 doubles, four home runs and 10 RBI and currently ranks second in the Eastern League with a .342 season batting average.

First Down... With yesterday's addition of Hagadone to the Akron roster, the team now has six different players that were originally drafted in the first-round of the MLB Draft. Drennen (2005), first baseman Beau Mills (2007), third baseman Lonnie Chisenhall (2008) and tonight's starter Alex White (2009) were all recent selections by the Indians. Reliever Bryan Price (2008) and Hagadone (2007) were both drafted by the Boston Red Sox and traded to Cleveland in the Victor Martinez deal in July 2009.

Did You Know... The Cleveland Indians Player Development System ranks second with a 120-92 (.566) record overall in 2010. The Tribe only trails the San Francisco Giants (126-86, .594 pct) thanks to league-leading performances so far from both the Class AAA Columbus Clippers (International League) and Class A Lake County Captains (Midwest League).
