Altoona Curve News Release

NEW BRITAIN, CT - Curve catcher Hector Gimenez missed becoming the first Altoona Curve player in franchise history to hit three home runs in a game by six inches as the veteran backstop enjoyed a career day, going 4-for-5 with a pair of two-run home runs and a pair of doubles. The switch hitter tied his career high driving in five runs in the Curve's 10-5 routing of the New Britain Rock Cats (AA - Minnesota Twins) on Wednesday afternoon at New Britain Stadium.

Gimenez has hit six home runs in the last six games that he has played.

The win puts the Curve at 35-18 which is tied for the best record in all of Minor League Baseball. Lake Elsinore is also 35-18 but doesn't play today.

The Altoona Curve pounded out a season-high 16 hits and had multi-hit contributions from five different players in their lineup as Gimenez smashed four hits, Josh Harrison and Jim Negrych each had three, while Matt Hague and Jordy Mercer both had a pair.

On the mound Justin Wilson fell behind early to New Britain (14-38) 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning, but the Curve would plate a total of seven unanswered runs to take a 7-1 lead. The lefty won his third straight game by tossing 5.2 innings with six strikeouts and five walks.

The Rock Cats would battle back and cut their deficits to four runs - 7-3 in the sixth inning but the Curve would counter with the second two-run blast by Gimenez in the eighth inning and grab a 9-3 edge.

New Britain would once again score a pair of runs, but the Curve would grab an insurance run in the ninth to take a 10-5 lead and hang on for the win.

The Curve are now 9-5-2 in series in the 2010 season and have won 13 of their last 15 games.

Altoona will look for the sweep of the Rock Cats on Thursday night at 6:35 p.m. RHP Tim Alderson (4-2, 4.75), the reigning Eastern League Pitcher of the Week will take the ball for Altoona while the Rock Cats counter with RHP Mike McCardell (0-5, 4.55). Air time on flagship radio station ESPN Radio 1430, WVAM and Altoona Curve Radio Network affiliates is 6:05 p.m.
