Fort Worth Brahmas News Release
NORTH RICHLAND HILLS, Texas- The Texas Brahmas and forward Scott Sheppard did a little Texas two-step as they won their second game in consecutive nights, this time over the Youngstown SteelHounds 5-2 at the NYTEX Sports Centre Saturday night.
As the first period began, things started slow for both teams, but just before the midway mark defensemen Mike Vellinga and Tim Laurila sent the puck to Anders Strome for a powerplay goal. Minutes later Strome did a little replay action as he whipped an even strength goal past SteelHounds goaltender Brad Roberts at the 10:07 mark. Kevin McLeod and Justin Kinnunen were rewarded the assists.
Still, the night belonged to Brahmas leading goal scorer Scott Sheppard. At the 11:35 mark in the first period, Sheppard scored his first goal of the night from Chris Thompson and Blair Manning. As the Brahmas went up 3-0, the SteelHounds felt it was time for a goalie change as back-up Layne Sedevie saw his first action of the season in net.
It seemed as if the roster change reversed the SteelHounds luck temporarily as Jason Baird was able to slide a goal past Brahmas netminder David Cacciola in the dying minutes of the first, making the game 3-1.
The Brahmas began the second period on the power play, and although they were unable to convert, the Brahmas still played relentlessly. The SteelHounds seemed unable to stay out of the penalty box, leading to a two man advantage for Texas in which Brahmas forward Sheppard knew what to do. Blair Manning and Justin Kinnunen set up Sheppard for his second of the night.
Youngstown still had plenty of fight left in them, especially defenseman Gord Burnett as he dropped the gloves with Brahmas tough guy Chris Mann at the 10:35 mark in the second period. The brawl woke the SteelHounds bench up as forward Kevin Jarman made Brahmas goalie Cacciola give up his second shorthanded goal of the season. The second ended with the Brahmas up 4-2.
As the Brahmas were looking for their first victory over the Northeast division leaders, Youngstown, the night ended with an exclamation point as Sheppard tallied his third goal of the evening for the hat trick. Chris Thompson and Grant Jacobsen had the assists.
The final score was a 5-2 Brahmas victory over the Youngstown SteelHounds. The SteelHounds outshot the Brahmas 29-35.
The Brahmas next home game is Tuesday, December 4 against the Austin Ice Bats at the NYTEX Sports Centre for a 7:05 PM start. For ticket information please call the Brahmas Box Office at (817) 336-4423 or go to www.brahmas.com.
