Hammond's Strong Start Lifts Boulders Past Quebec
July 1, 2021 - Frontier League (FL)
New York Boulders News Release
Rockland County, NY - Andrew Hammond gave the New York Boulders a solid six innings in his initial start of the season and helped them post a 5-2 Frontier League victory over Equipe Quebec on Thursday at Palisades Credit Union Park.
Hammond, in only his second appearance, in six innings of work, allowed just three hits and two runs, none earned. He walked just one and struck out three.
James Mulry followed with two scoreless innings for the Boulders, giving way to Tanner Kiest, who tossed a perfect ninth inning to pick up his third save of the year.
The win evened Hammond's record at 1-1 and gave the Boulders the series win two games to one.
The Boulders snapped a 2-2 tie in the fourth inning with a two-run triple by Milton Smith, Jr. that scored Brandon Bingel and Zach Penprase, who each had singled. All three hits came with two outs in the frame against Quebec starter Nick Economos. The hit gave New York a 4-2 advantage.
It became 5-2 in the fifth inning when Ray Hernandez blasted his eighth home run of the year, a solo shot.
New York took a 1-0 first inning lead when Ryan Ramiz singled home Zach Kirtley, who had singled.
Meanwhile, Hammond retired the first seven batters he faced before some shaky fielding cost the righthander. A trio of Boulders' errors led to two unearned Quebec runs - the runs coming via a single by L.P. Pelletier and a sacrifice fly off the bat of David Glaude.
New York tied it at 2-2 in the bottom of the third on Tucker Nathans' solo home run, his fifth of the season.
Economos was tagged with the loss, dropping his season mark to 1-2.
