Nashville Kats News Release
NASHVILLE (May 25, 2005) â Nashville Kats wide receiver/linebacker Darryl Hammond, in his 15th season in the Arena Football League, has been named to the league's U.S. Army All-Ironman team. The squad, announced on Thursday, recognizes the AFL's top two-way players.
Hammond (6-3, 220) has played longer than any player in league history, and this honor comes after an outstanding season which saw him catch 66 passes for 632 yards and eight TD's. He also ran the ball seven times for 10 yards and a TD. Defensively, Hammond had 42.5 tackles, including one for a loss, two interceptions and a fumble recovery.
Earlier this year, the veteran from Virginia became just the second player in league history to have 8,000 receiving yards and 30 interceptions in a career. San Jose WR/LB Barry Wagner is the only other player to have accomplished the feat. Hammond now has 8,459 receiving yards and 31 INT's. Earlier this season, he also became just the third player in AFL history to surpass 600 tackles (Wagner and Grand Rapids' Damon Mason are the other two). He is fourth in AFL history with 780 career receptions and ranks ninth on the league's all-time receiving-yards gained in a career with 8,459 yards. Hammond has returned six interceptions for touchdowns in his career, tied for third-most in the AFL, and he ranks third in the league for career tackles with 631.5. The veteran was featured in the May 9 issue of Sports Illustrated, and is also in the upcoming film "The Longest Yard."
This is the fourth time Hammond has been named to the All-Ironman squad in the seven years the team has been in existence. He previously was selected in 2003 as a member of the Georgia Force and in 2000 and 2001 with the original Kats franchise. Hammond was honored as first-team All-Arena in 1995 and 1996, when he played with the St. Louis Stampede, and in 1999 while with the Kats.
