Tacoma Rainiers News Release
TACOMA, Wash. - Greg Halman went 2-for-3 with his 18th home run and Ian Snell pitched seven strong innings as the Tacoma Rainiers finished off a three-game sweep with an 8-2 win over the Portland Beavers Saturday night at Cheney Stadium.
Halman, who homered four times during the three-game set, led off a four-run fourth inning with a homer off Portland starter Steve Garrison (1-2). He also drove in the Rainiers' (44-38) first run of the night with an RBI single in the second.
Snell (2-1) held the Beavers (31-51) to two runs - both on solo home runs - on four hits and two walks while striking out four.
Matt Mangini went 2-for-4 with a triple and three runs scored and David Winfree and Chris Woodward each had two hits and two RBIs for Tacoma, who beat Portland for the seventh straight time at home and the 31st time in their last 36 meetings overall.
Kyle Phillips and Mike Baxter hit solo home runs to provide Portland with its only two runs.
Garrison could not get out of the fourth inning, giving up six earned runs on eight hits in 3 1/3 innings on the night.
Portland got on the board first with Phillips' homer in the second inning, his second as a Beaver since joining the club at the beginning of the seven-game road trip a week ago.
The Rainiers started the second inning with three straight hits on their way to putting up three runs. After Adam Moore doubled to center, Mike Carp singled to left and Halman drove in Moore with the first of three RBI singles to left in the frame. Winfree and Woodward later added run-scoring singles.
Over the first five batters of the fourth inning, the Rainiers collected a home run, triple, double and single - in that order - to stretch their 3-1 lead into a 7-1 advantage. After Halman led off with the homer, Mangini tripled and scored on Mike Wilson's double. Woodward then greeted reliever Scott Munter with an RBI single before scoring two batters later on Brad Nelson's single.
Winfree picked up another RBI in the fifth with a double.
Baxter went deep in the seventh inning for Portland's second run.
The Beavers host Las Vegas Sunday night for a Fourth of July matchup at 7:05 p.m. (Pacific). Tickets are available through the PGE Park box office, area Ticketmaster outlets, online at www.ticketmaster.com or by phone at (800) 745-3000.
