Sounds Close Homestand With 3-1 Loss

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds ended their homestand on the short end of a 3-1 loss to the New Orleans Zephyrs on Saturday evening at historic Greer Stadium in the finale of a three-game series.

It was a pretty good crowd for a Saturday, as 9,575 fans took in the victory then watched the Sounds' Independence Day Weekend fireworks spectacular following the on-field action.

With the defeat, Nashville (44-38) suffered just its second home series loss of the season, dropping two of three to the Z's. The Sounds finished their homestand with a 4-3 mark.

New Orleans starter Tom Mastny (2-0) twirled an outstanding outing for the visitors, holding Nashville to just one run on four hits over seven strong innings. He walked two batters and struck out three in his quality start.

Outfielder Brendan Katin homered for the second straight night for Nashville to provide the club's lone run on the evening. The slugger leads the Sounds with 12 longballs this season.

Sounds starter Chase Wright worked into and out of a no-out, bases-loaded jam in the top of the second inning. After Brett Carroll, Danny Richar, and Tim Torres opened the frame with three straight singles to jam the bags, the Nashville southpaw struck out Scott Cousins for the first out then induced an inning-ending 1-2-3 from Neil Wilson to escape the jam unscathed.

The Zephyrs broke through against Wright an inning later, taking a 3-0 lead in the top of the third.

Mastny led off with a single, moved to third on a Gookie Dawkins double, and scored on Logan Morrison's sacrifice fly in foul territory. The next two runs scored on consecutive throwing errors by Nashville shortstop Ray Olmedo, who misfired to first on groundballs hit by Carroll and Richar. The second and third runs of the frame were unearned as a result of the miscues.

Katin put the Sounds on the board in the bottom of the fourth with a mammoth two-out homer the careened off the top of the guitar-shaped scoreboard in left-center field. The solo blast, which came on an 0-1 offering from Mastny, was Katin's team-leading 12th roundtripper of the year.

Nashville put the potential tying runs on base in the ninth as Katin and Joe Koshansky drew back-to-back one-out walks from Matt Peterson. Dan Meyer was summoned from the New Orleans bullpen and induced a groundout from Olmedo for the second out before popping up Johnny Raburn to end the contest and nail down his first save of the season.

Wright (6-4) took the loss for the Sounds after allowing three runs (one earned) on seven hits over his five innings of work.

The Sounds embark on an eight-day, nine-game road trip on Sunday as they head to Oklahoma City for a four-game series with the RedHawks (AAA-Rangers). Nashville will conclude the trip with a five-game stop in Memphis before heading into the Triple-A All-Star break.

Left-hander Sam Narron (2-3, 3.64) will start Sunday's 7:05 p.m. series opener at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark to face Oklahoma City right-hander Elizardo Ramirez (4-3, 5.53).

Baseball returns to Music City on Thursday, July 15, when the Sounds welcome the division-rival Omaha Royals to town for a four-game series.
