Tacoma Rainiers News Release
Tacoma, WA - The Tacoma Rainiers scored a season-high seven runs in the fifth inning to roll past Portland 11-6 at Cheney Stadium on Friday night.
The scoring barrage came with the game tied at 4-4 and followed a rain delay that halted play for nearly an hour.
Brad Nelson grounded into a fielder's choice that scored Jack Hannahan to get things going in the inning, while Adam Moore followed with a two-RBI triple one batter later. Mike Carp's sacrifice fly drove in Moore before outfielder Greg Halman cleared the bases with a two-run home run in the next at-bat. Mike Wilson went deep one out later, a solo shot, to round out the Rainiers rampage of runs.
The seven-run inning was all part of a string of offensive success that saw the Rainiers overcome a three-run hole and score all 11 runs over the third through the fifth innings.
One night after hitting a go-ahead home run for the Rainiers, Halman played the hero again on Friday. He finished the night going 2-for-4 with a pair of long balls en route to recording four RBI. Outfielder Luis Durango led the Beavers lineup after notching three hits and driving in two runs.
Right-hander Andy Baldwin picked up the win for the Rainiers, his fifth of the season, after coming in for starter Ryan Feierabend following the 53-minute rain delay. Baldwin allowed two runs, one earned, on three hits over three innings. The left-hander Feierabend surrendered three runs on six hits over three innings to collect the no decision.
Portland starter Josh Geer gave up eight runs, seven earned, on seven hits with three walks and two strikeouts in the losing effort.
The Rainiers finish out their series finale with the Beavers on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. for the team's annual 3rd of July game. Right-hander Ian Snell (1-1, 4.00) is scheduled to take the mound for Tacoma with left-hander Steve Garrison (1-1, 5.11) set to start for Portland. Fireworks will be fired following the conclusion of the game.
