Halladay Haunts Caps in Shutout

Madison Capitols News Release

Bloomington, IL - The Madison Capitols (11-15-1-2) could not solve the Bloomington Thunder (16-9-2-1) defense and netminder as they fell 2-0 at the U.S. Cellular Coliseum on Saturday night.

In a first period that seemed to happen in light speed with very few whistles stopping play, the Thunder carried the mail in terms of the scoring chances and the shots on goal, outshooting the Capitols 15-8. However, Garrett Metcalf had a stellar beginning to his night, maintaining his poise in his crease despite many pucks in high traffic areas in tight.

At the other end, Logan Halladay would not have as tough a first period for the Thunder, but the goalie was able to have a reply to all eight Madison offerings.

Metcalf saw action quiet down around him a bit in the second period, as he made ten more stops to bring his game total up to 25. Meanwhile, at the other end, the Capitols began to force the issue offensively, as they registered 12 second period shots, many of which came on a four-minute power play late in the frame, but Halladay continued to fight through traffic and screens while receiving help from his defense mates.

Perhaps the best chance of the middle frame came from Bloomington forward and Verona, Wis. native Tarek Baker, who moved in on right wing and punched a snap shot on Metcalf down low. The Capitol goalie stumbled and took a peek behind him, but the puck stayed out to keep things scoreless heading into the third.

After the Capitols saw their power play expire, the Thunder got their own man-up chance and finally cracked their goose egg, as Baker jammed home a rebound at the side of the net off of a Patrick Curry wrap-around shot. The Verona native got his team on the board at the 2:55 mark, and it would be all the help Halladay would need.

To aid their goaltender, the Thunder would get insurance as Curry took a feed in the slot and squeaked a low shot through Metcalf to make it 2-0 at 11:08.

Halladay then kept his magnificent play rolling, as he denied all nine third period shots the Capitols could muster, completing his second straight shutout. Bloomington has now won eight of its last nine games.

Despite the loss, Metcalf was magnificent, denying 41 Bloomington shots on a night when he was busy at almost all times.
