Lexington Legends News Release
Hagerstown jumps on Legends early, wins 9-1 Hagerstown jumped out to a 6-0 lead after two innings and behind the pitching of left-handers Sammy Solis and Paul Applebee, the Suns defeated the Lexington Legends 9-1 Wednesday night at Applebee's Park.
Rick Hague led off the game with a double, and moved to third as Justino Cuevas' sacrifice bunt was mishandled by Lexington pitcher Luis Cruz for an error. Hague scored as Cuevas was forced out at second on a ground ball to third hit by J.P. Ramirez. Second baseman Jimmy Paredes relay to first sailed into the stands for the second Legends error of the inning, and Ramirez advanced to second. After Dustin Hood walked, Brett Newsome singled to right, scoring Ramirez with the second run of the inning and sending Hood to third. With Mills Rogers at bat, Newsome broke for second and was caught in a rundown. Hood scored as Rogers was tagged out to give Hagerstown a 3-0 margin.
The Suns added three more runs in the second inning. Adrian Nieto led off with his second home run of the year, a line drive over the wall in left center field. Sandy Leon doubled, and Eury Perez reached on a bunt single. Perez was caught stealing, but Hague walked. Justino Cuevas followed with a double down the left field line, scoring Leon and Hague to make it 6-0.
Solis, a second round choice of the Washington Nationals in the June 2010 draft, made his professional debut and worked the first two innings, retiring all six batters he faced. Applebee (6-5) relieved at the start of the third inning and finished the game to get the win. He allowed four hits and one run in seven innings and struck out five batters.
Hagerstown scored twice in the fourth inning to build the lead to 8-0. A single by Hague and a double by Ramirez produced one run. Ramirez then went to third on an infield out and scored on a wild pitch by Lexington reliever Colton Pitkin.
The Suns scored their final run in the top of the fifth. Rogers doubled, went to third on an infield out and scored when catcher Bubby Williams, when returning the ball to Pitkin after a pitch, bounced his throw on the mound in front of the pitcher. The ball rolled behind the mound, far enough for Rogers to cross the plate safely.
The Legends didn't have a base runner until Jonathan Meyer singled with two outs in the fifth inning, and didn't score until two outs in the ninth. Brian Kemp led off the ninth with a double, and scored two outs later on a double by Barry Butera.
Cruz (7-5) was the losing pitcher.
Lexington has won two of the first three games of the series, which concludes with a 7:05 p.m. game Thursday.
