Suns Surge of Runs Stand up to Legends

The Hagerstown Suns (28-37, 64-71) surged for six runs in the first two innings to leap back into their four game road series during Game 3 against the Lexington Legends (32-32, 67-67) at Applebee's Park on Wednesday night, winning 9-1.

Second round Nationals draft pick, Sammy Solis, out of the University of San Diego, made his first professional start, going 2.0 perfect innings, while gathering one strikeout.

In the top of the first frame, a fielder's choice chopper by LF J.P. Ramirez brought home SS Rick Hague, who led off with a double into left center field. RF Destin Hood drew a walk. Then, 1B Brett Newsome lashed an RBI single to right field, plating Ramirez. Newsome would purposely get in a rundown between first and second base, allowing Hood to cross home plate, giving the Suns a 3-0 lead.

Lexington LHP Luis Cruz (7-5), the losing pitcher, would make it through just 1.2 innings, allowing six runs, five of them earned on six hits, while walking three.

Hagerstown hitters would tack on three more runs to garner a 6-0 advantage in the away half of the second stanza when C Adrian Nieto led off with his second home run of the season, a low line drive shot over the left center field fence. With one out, 3B Justino Cuevas laced a two RBI double down the line in left field summoning home DH Sandy Leon, who doubled to left center, and Hague, who walked.

Suns LHP Paul Applebee (6-5), the winner, was terrific in piggy-backing Solis' first pro start by tossing 7.0 frames, allowing just one earned run on four hits, without walking a single batter, and collecting five K's.

The Suns offense was not done quite yet after those six runs through the first third of the game. The visiting club would create three more runs of insurance, getting two in the top half of the fourth inning, and one in the fifth. Cuevas reached on a fielder's choice, and Ramirez ripped a double to the center field wall scoring Cuevas. A wild pitch by LHP Colton Pitkin would bring home Ramirez.

An inning later, 2B Mills Rogers doubled into the alleyway in left field, and after advancing to third, a wild relay back to the mound in between pitches by C Bubby Williams allowed Rogers to dash home.

The Suns led 9-0 until the bottom of the ninth inning when LF Brian Kemp doubled off the right field wall, and SS Barry Butera stroked a two-base hit into right center to send Kemp home for the Legends sole run of the game in the losing effort.
