Hadland Completes Wheat Kings' Overtime Comeback Win

January 9, 2024 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

The Wheat Kings entered play against the Victoria Royals looking for both their first goal and their first win of the New Year. They had the former by the end of the first period, and while it took overtime, they got the latter as well.

Brett Hyland, Nate Danielson and Caleb Hadland scored as the Wheat Kings took a 3-2 overtime win over the Victoria Royals. Carson Bjarnason made 25 saves in the win.

"It almost felt like deja vu a little bit at times," said Wheat Kings head coach and GM Marty Murray, referring to the most recent loss for the team where they piled up 48 shots but lost 4-0. "A big goal by Hyland right at the end of the first to relieve that pressure, you could almost feel the pressure mounting there... The second and third goals, we talk about second efforts on pucks and those are great examples."

The Royals opened the scoring on the power play, just 27 seconds into their first man advantage of the game. Reggie Newman, parked at the mouth of the crease, poked home a feed from below the goal line to give the visitors the lead.

It took until the first period was nearly complete, but the Wheat Kings ended their goalless drought and tied the score. Hyland moved around the offensive zone from his right to his left, waited patiently until he had a lane, and then bounced one in off a backchecking Royal to tie things up at one.

A series of bizarre bounces gave the Royals the lead back in the second period. After the Wheat Kings cleared the puck out of the front of their net twice, only to have it bounce right back there both times, Cole Reschny was left staring at an open cage and he made no mistake.

Though the Wheat Kings had a hard time breaking down the Royals' defense in the third, they finally broke through when it mattered. Roger McQueen took a shot from the high slot and created a rebound that popped high in the air, with Danielson waiting to bat it home and tie the game again.

In overtime, it was a point shot of all things that generated the game winner. Charlie Elick let one go through traffic and created a rebound, with Hadland waiting to chop home the winner.

The win breaks a modest two-game losing streak for the Wheat Kings and helps restore some momentum ahead of a battle with the Swift Current Broncos on Friday night. Puck drop is 7:00.
