Gwinnett Sweeps Columbus in Doubleheader, 4-0 and 8-3

LAWRENCEVILLE, GA. - The Gwinnett Braves swept the doubleheader from the Columbus Clippers with 4-0 and 8-3 wins on Friday night in front of 7,292 fans at Coolray Field. Luis Durango went 5-for-7 with a triple, four runs scored and one RBI and Tyler Pastornicky finished 4-for-6 with two doubles and five RBIs as the G-Braves won back-to-back games for the first time since May 28-29 vs. Lehigh Valley.

Todd Redmond (W, 6-4) was outstanding in game one as he pitched a complete-game shutout for the G-Braves. Redmond allowed no runs on four hits, walked three and struck out five in his first shutout effort since throwing a nine-inning three-hitter for Gwinnett in a win over Rochester on May 18, 2011. He finished with 115 pitches, 73 for strikes, lowering his ERA from 3.52 to 3.20 on the season.

Durango served as the catalyst for the offense in game one, going 3-for-3 with two runs scored. He singled, stole second and scored on Pastornicky's first hit of the night in the third inning to give Gwinnett a 1-0 lead, then singled and scored on a wild pitch to raise the lead to 3-0 in the fifth. Durango stole two bases on the night, giving him an International League best 26 steals in 33 attempts this season.

Pastornicky and Josh Wilson added sacrifice flies in the 4-0 game one win.

Columbus left-hander Chris Seddon (L, 7-4) also went the distance in game one, but lost with four earned runs on nine hits over 6.0 innings.

In game two, Gwinnett didn't waste much time getting on the scoreboard as the road team, scoring twice to take a 2-0 lead. Durango tripled down the right-field line and scored on a Pastornicky double. Ernesto Mejia then singled home Pastornicky.

The G-Braves crossed the plate five times in the top of the second, raising their lead to 7-0 over Columbus. Christian Marrero led off the inning with a double and scored two batters later on a single by J.C. Boscan. Durango followed with his fifth hit of the night, a single scoring Wilson, and Pastornicky then knocked in Boscan with yet another single. Mejia and Felix Pie added RBI singles, capping the seven-hit frame.

Gwinnett starter Eric Junge (W, 4-6) worked for 5.0 innings, allowing just two runs on four hits in game two. The right-hander struck out six and walked three en route to his first win since April 26. His only blemish of the outing came in the fourth when Russ Canzler homered for the second time in two nights, lifting a two-run shot to left-center. Canzler's fifth blast of the season cut the lead to 8-2.

Buddy Carlyle worked 2.0 innings in relief of Junge and allowed one run on four hits in clean-up duty.

Columbus left-hander David Huff (L, 3-3) was tagged for eight earned runs on 12 hits over just 3.0 innings in the game-two start. Relievers Eric Berger and Chris Ray combined on 4.0 scoreless innings the rest of the way.

Pastornicky's big night extended his hitting streak to nine games, the longest active streak on the club. Mejia went a combined 3-for-7 on the night, extending his hitting streak to eight games.

Trevor Crowe went 2-for-3 in game one for the Clippers. Canzler finished 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs, while Ezequiel Carrera went 2-for-4 with one RBI as well in game two.

The Gwinnett Braves (37-32) and Columbus Clippers (31-37) will play the fourth game of their five-game series on Saturday night at Coolray Field, first pitch scheduled for 7:05 PM. Right-hander Julio Teheran (5-2, 3.15) is scheduled to start for the G-Braves, while the Clippers counter with right-hander Zach McAllister (4-2, 2.98). The game will be broadcast on WDUN 550 AM and 102.9 FM in Gainesville, GA with Tony Schiavone calling the play-by-play.
