SLUGGING IT OUT IN LOUISVILLE: The Rochester Red Wings tonight play the 2nd game of their 4-game series at Louisville (Reds), continuing their 8-game roadtrip that started by losing 3 of 4 at Indianapolis and winning yesterday's opener 8-6. Following 3 more with the Bats, the Wings return home Monday for an 8-game stay with 4-game series vs. Durham (Rays) and Charlotte (White Sox).
a Buffalo Bills Nick Barnett and Brian Moorman will sign autographs prior to Monday's game at Frontier Field from 6:00-6:50 p.m.
ROSTER NEWS: The Minnesota Twins today are expected to recall right-handed pitcher Liam Hendriks, who was originally scheduled to start tonight's game at Louisville. The 23-year-old Australia native went 5-0 with a 1.94 ERA in 7 starts with the Red Wings after he was optioned from Minnesota May 7. His 5 wins leads the Red Wings and he is the club's first pitcher to start a season 5-0 since Anthony Swarzak went 5-0 in his first 6 starts of the 2008 campaign. Hendriks's 1.94 ERA would lead the International League if he had enough innings to qualify. He was named as the IL's Pitcher of the Week for the week of June 4-10, going 2-0 with 15.2 scoreless innings in 2 starts.
a Hendriks is the 11th player, the 6th pitcher, to be promoted to the Twins from Triple-A Rochester.
a Righthander Cole DeVries is being bumped up a day to pitch tonight, but will still be on normal 4 days' rest.
GOING BATTY: The Red Wings yesterday snapped a 3-game losing streak with an 8-6 win at Louisville. They erupted for 8 runs after scoring all of 3 runs in the recently-completed 4-game series at Indianapolis. The Wings' offense went a season-high 27 consecutive innings without scoring until breaking through with a run in the 4th inning last night.
a The Red Wings had also gone 20 straight at-bats with runners in scoring position without a hit until Danny Valencia's 5th-inning single loaded the bases yesterday. Matt Carson then legged out an infield single to drive in the Wings' first run.
a Last night marked the Red Wings' 12th come-from-behind win, their 3rd in true road games. In fact, each of Rochester's last 3 road victories has been of the come-from-behind variety.
BETTER BASEBALL: The Red Wings yesterday picked up win No. 30 in their 66th game, 7 games quicker than last year and 14 games sooner than in 2010. Rochester was 27-39 at this point in both 2010 and 2011.
a The Red Wings are 16-13 in their last 29 games beginning May 15 and are 21-20 beginning May 3.
a Rochester yesterday improved to 12-10 against clubs with a current losing record. It is 18-26 against teams with a current winning record.
a The Wings are in the midst of playing 16 of 20 games through June 21 against teams with a current losing record. The lone exception was the 4-game series at Indianapolis last weekend. Following this stretch, the Wings will play 18 straight games leading into the All-Star break against teams with a current winning record, including 5 against IL North Division-leading Pawtucket July 2-6.
MORE OF THAT, PLEASE: The Red Wings yesterday scored more than 5 runs for just the 9th time in 66 games. Rochester has scored an IL-worst 213 runs, an average of 3.2 per game. The Wings are 31 runs behind the next closest team in the IL, Durham, which has 243.
a The Red Wings are 7-2 when scoring more than 5 runs, including 4 straight wins in such contests.
a The Red Wings have scored 39 runs in 13 games in June, an average of 3.0 runs per game. Despite the 3.0-run average, the Wings are still 8-5 during the month.
a Only Charlotte in the IL has more wins in June with 9, although Empire State (Yankees) Indianapolis, Norfolk (Orioles), and Pawtucket (Red Sox) all have 8 wins as well.
COLE POSITION: Cole DeVries tonight looks to become the first Red Wings' starter other than Liam Hendriks to post a win in the last 13 games. Hendriks went 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA (0 ER/15.2 IP) in 2 starts while the rest of the staff is 0-3 with a 4.62 ERA (19 ER/37.0 IP) in 10 starts in that time.
a Red Wings' starters are 17-19 with a 3.79 ERA (139 ER/330.0 IP) overall. There have been 14 different starters used by manager Gene Glynn.
CALLING ALL STARS: Voting for the 2012 Triple-A All-Star Game is underway. The game, featuring the IL and the Pacific Coast League, will be played July 11 at Buffalo's Coca-Cola Field. Fans can vote by visiting RedWingsBaseball.com and clicking on the "Fan Zone" tab through June 22. Red Wings' candidates are Matt Carson, who leads the team with a .292 batting average, 59 hits, 16 doubles, 21 RBI, 85 total bases, 28 runs scored, and 60 games played; and Anthony Slama, who has a 0.40 ERA, a team-leading 9 saves, and 37 strikeouts in 22.2 innings.
