Chiefs Lose Late against Yankees

The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, lost to the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees, 5-4, on Friday night at Alliance Bank Stadium. The Yankees overcame a 4-1 deficit thanks to a four-run seventh inning.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (38-30) - considered the home team as its stadium in Pennsylvania is under construction in 2012 - manufactured the night's first run in the bottom of the third inning against Syracuse starter Mitch Atkins. Right fielder Colin Curtis started the frame with a single to right field, but he was eliminated when Ramiro Pena hit into a fielder's choice groundout. Chris Dickerson followed with a single to left-center field that moved Pena to third base. Pena then scored on a Corban Joseph sacrifice fly.

Despite the Chiefs putting six runners on base through the first four frames, the Yankees' 1-0 lead held until the fifth inning. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre starter Dellin Betances allowed a leadoff single to Corey Brown, before forcing Erik Komatsu to fly out and striking out Mark Teahen. Syracuse came up with a two-out rally, though, as Brett Carroll singled up the middle. That extended the inning for Xavier Paul, who launched a three-run home run over the fence in right field to put the Chiefs up 3-1.

Syracuse (32-35) tacked on an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning off of reliever Chase Whitley. It was Paul again who drove in the run. The designated hitter knocked a double to left-center that scored Komatsu, who led the inning off with a walk.

A 4-1 lead wasn't enough for the Chiefs against a resilient Scranton/Wilkes-Barre squad. Atkins began the inning only to come out after allowing singles to Francisco Cervelli and Curtis. Right-hander Ryan Perry entered out of the bullpen and threw a wild pitch that put both runners in scoring position. They crossed home when Pena tripled to the corner in right, as the Yankees made the game 4-3. After throwing a wild pitch that brought Pena home to tie the game, 4-4, and walking Dickerson, Perry left the game in favor of Atahualpa Severino, who walked Joseph. Severino got the second out of the inning with a strikeout of Ronnier Mustelier, but he allowed a run-scoring single to Jack Cust, which gave the Yankees a 5-4 lead.

The Chiefs were unable to respond with a rally of their own against Yankees reliever Justin Thomas, who earned the win. The left-hander threw two and one-third innings of hitless ball, striking out three and walking just one.

Syracuse and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre reconvene at Alliance Bank Stadium again on Saturday night at 7:00. John Lannan is scheduled to start for the Chiefs against the Yankees' D.J. Mitchell.
