
Gwinnett Braves Add Catcher Wil Nieves

LAWRENCEVILLE, GA - The Gwinnett Braves, in conjunction with the Atlanta Braves, have announced the addition of catcher Wil Nieves to the club's 25-man roster. The Atlanta Braves signed Nieves to a minor league contract. To make room on the roster, catcher Matt Kennelly was transferred to Double-A Mississippi.
Nieves, 37, opened the season with the San Diego Padres, batting .077 (1-for-13) with a home run and four RBIs in six games. The Padres, who had signed Nieves as a free agent on January 31, designated him for assignment on May 4. Nieves elected free agency on May 11.
Nieves has played 370 Major League games over 12 seasons with seven organizations, including the Padres (2002, 2015), New York Yankees (2005-07), Washington Nationals (2008-10), Milwaukee Brewers (2011), Colorado Rockies (2012), Arizona Diamondbacks (2012-13) and Philadelphia Phillies (2014). He is a career .241 hitter (281-for-1,164) with 54 doubles, two triples, 10 home runs, 88 runs scored, 114 RBIs and three stolen bases.
Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Nieves was originally selected by the Padres in the 47th round of the 1995 June draft. He has also played in 1,094 games in affiliated Minor League Baseball, batting .284 (1,076-for-3,788) with 194 doubles, 20 triples, 56 home runs, 441 runs scored, 458 RBIs and 30 stolen bases.
Kennelly, 26, batted .204 (10-for-49) with three doubles, six runs scored and seven RBIs in 18 games with Gwinnett this season.
The Gwinnett Braves (15-17) play game three of a four-game series against the Syracuse Chiefs (14-18) tonight at Coolray Field, first pitch scheduled for 6:35 p.m. Left-hander Manny Banuelos (2-0, 3.06 ERA) starts for the G-Braves, while the Chiefs counter with right-hander Taylor Jordan (1-2, 2.88 ERA). Tony Schiavone has the play-by-play call on 97.7 FM and WSBRadio.com beginning at 6:00 p.m.
