Gwinnett Stripers News Release

LAWRENCEVILLE, GA - Third baseman Adonis Garcia's team-leading 19th RBI gave the Gwinnett Braves (16-17) their fourth walk-off victory of the season with a 2-1 triumph over the Syracuse Chiefs (14-19) in 10 innings Wednesday at Coolray Field.

Garcia's two-out single to left drove in Eury Perez for the winning run after Perez had reached on a bunt single. Pinch hitter Wil Nieves led off the inning with a walk against right-handed reliever Eric Fornataro, but was thrown out at home plate when he tried to score on a ground ball hit to second base by Cedric Hunter.

The G-Braves improved their record in extra-inning games to 3-2 in a contest that was knotted at one run apiece since the third inning.

Syracuse scored a run off of G-Braves' left-handed starter Manny Banuelos in the top of the third, but he also led the rally to tie the game at 1-1 in the bottom half of the frame. Banuelos drilled a ground-rule double over the right-field wall for his first career hit. He then scored on Jose Peraza's team-leading third triple of the season.

The Chiefs loaded the bases in both the third and fourth innings, but Banuelos escaped with one run allowed. That came in the third inning when Cutter Dykstra tagged and scored on a ball Emmanuel Burriss popped to second baseman Peraza in foul territory.

Banuelos lasted 5.0 innings with one run allowed on four hits, three walks and four strikeouts in 93 pitches, 56 of which were strikes. Right-hander Carlos Fisher helped keep the game tied with one hit and one walk allowed in 2.0 scoreless innings with two strikeouts, and left-hander Ian Thomas delivered a pair of scoreless innings with one hit given up and three strikeouts.

Right-handed reliever Aaron Kurcz (W, 1-2) kept the Chiefs silent in the top of the 10th, as he pitched around a single and a walk by striking out Dan Butler to end the threat.

Chiefs' right-handed starter Taylor Jordan held the G-Braves to a run on six hits with four strikeouts in 8.0 innings, and Fornataro stranded Daniel Castro at third in the ninth inning after he led off the frame with a walk.

Left-hander Rich Hill gave up the game-winning hit to Garcia in the 10th, but Fornataro (L, 0-1) took the loss because he put the winning run aboard.

Perez was the only G-Braves' hitter with more than one base hit. He finished 3-for-5 with a run scored and his International League-leading 18th stolen base.

Similarly, Ian Stewart was the lone Syracuse batter with more than a single hit, as he went 2-for-5.

Gwinnett and Syracuse will conclude their four-game series with a 10:35 a.m. game Thursday at Coolray Field. The G-Braves will have left-hander Greg Smith (1-1, 1.80 ERA) on the mound, and the Chiefs will start right-hander Taylor Hill (2-1, 4.86 ERA). Dave Lezotte has the play-by-play call on 97.7 FM and WSBRadio.com beginning at 10:00 a.m.

Thursday is "Education Day" at Coolray Field, presented by Belk. Local schools will be in attendance for a day of baseball and learning. The Education Zone on the concourse will allow students to try out baseball equipment and test their skills with various math and science activities. To purchase tickets, call the Coolray Field Ticket Office at 678-277-0340 or visit GwinnettBraves.com/tickets.
