Syracuse Mets News Release
The Syracuse Chiefs, Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, fell to the Gwinnett Braves, 2-1, in 10 innings on Wednesday. Adonis Garcia singled in the game-winning run with two outs in the 10th to lift the G-Braves to the win. Taylor Jordan was outstanding for the Chiefs in the loss, hurling eight innings of one-run ball. Jordan struck out six and threw just 18 balls in 84 pitches.
Syracuse (14-19) grabbed the lead first in the third inning. Cutter Dykstra started with a walk against Manny Banuelos and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jordan. Dykstra advanced to third on a single by Darin Mastroianni, before Banuelos hit Tony Gwynn, Jr. with a pitch to load the bases. Emmanuel Burriss then popped out to second baseman Jose Peraza in foul ground behind first, deep enough for Dykstra to score the game's first run on a sacrifice fly.
Gwinnett (16-17) immediately answered in the bottom of the frame. Banuelos helped his own cause, doubling with one out. He came around to score two batters later on a triple by Jose Peraza to tie the game at one.
With two outs in the top of the eighth inning, the game was stopped when the Coolray Field fire alarm went off due to smoke in a stadium restaurant. Play resumed after a seven-minute delay.
The game held at 1-1 into extra innings. In the bottom of the 10th, pinch-hitter Will Nieves walked off Eric Fornataro. Eury Perez then reached on a bunt single to put two runners on. A sacrifice bunt by Peraza moved the runners up to second and third with one out. The Chiefs turned to the bullpen and Rich Hill, who induced a ground ball to second from Cedric Hunter. Dykstra fielded and threw home, with Dan Butler tagging out Nieves at the plate for the second out. Garcia, however, followed with a line-drive single into left field, scoring Perez to win the game.
The Chiefs can still pick up a series win Thursday in a 10:35 a.m. series finale. Taylor Hill gets the ball for Syracuse opposite Greg Smith for Gwinnett.
