Gulls Prospect Mitch Love Signs With Avs

October 11, 2005 - ECHL (ECHL)
San Diego Gulls News Release

SAN DIEGO - Rookie defenseman Mitch Love, who originally signed with the Gulls in August, has reached an agreement with the Colorado Avalanche, San Diego's NHL affiliate. Colorado has assigned Love to its American Hockey League affiliate, the Lowell Lock Monsters.

Gulls head coach Martin St. Amour, who signed Love earlier this offseason, said it wasn't a surprise that he was inked by the Avalanche.

"It was only a matter of time before Colorado signed him," St. Amour said. "We know how good he is and while we would've loved to have him play here for us, Mitch really deserves a shot with the Avs and Lowell.

"We already received some quality players from the Avs and this just further illustrates the relationship we have with them. They're going to send us some players and we hope to send them some players as well. I think the Avs and Lock Monsters will both benefit with Mitch's presence in the lineup."

Love began training camp with Colorado before being sent to Lowell, which begins its regular season Friday against the Manchester Monarchs.

Before signing with the Gulls and Avalanche, Love spent the last five full seasons playing juniors in the Western Hockey League. In 59 games last season with the Everett Silvertips, the 6-foot, 190-pounder from Quesnel, British Columbia netted a junior career high 29 points (9g, 20a), while also amassing 142 penalty minutes. The 21-year-old has increased his point-total every season in juniors and has averaged about 180 penalty minutes per year.

The Gulls open the regular season Friday, Oct. 21 in Alaska and open their home schedule Saturday, Nov. 5 against Stockton. Season ticket packages are currently on sale. For pricing and benefits, contact 619-224-GOAL, ext. 7. Individual tickets are now on sale.
