Sanford Mainers News Release

NEWPORT, R.I. - The Sanford Mainers (8-10) had plenty of chances, but never could quite break through at Cardines Field Wednesday night.

The Newport Gulls (8-10) shutdown the Mainers, in nearly every rally they conjured, stranding 13 runners, including two bases loaded scenarios in the 2nd and the 4th. Sanford managed a lone run on seven hits, aided by four Gulls errors. Offensively they were led by shortstop John Cresto (Santa Clara) who was the only Mainer with multiple hits.

Newport jumped to it right away in the 1st, when Charlie Carpenter (South Carolina-Upstate) singled in Troy Dixon (St. Johns) to make it 1-0 early. Jake Brodt (Santa Clara) stood in next, and hit a towering home run over the right field fence to make it 3-0, a deficit the Mainers would never close.

Newport added another three runs in the 2nd inning on three hits and walk, with one of the hits going for extra bases. The Gulls chased Mainers starter Samuel Steeves (Franklin Pierce) after only two-plus innings, allowing seven hits, six runs, two walks and two strikeouts.

The Gulls scored lone runs in the 4th and 6th innings as well to reach their total of eight.

Sanford grabbed their lone run of the ballgame in the 6th. Michael Young (Massachusetts Lowell) reached on a one out hit-by-pitch, later scoring on a Sam Stauble (Southern Maine) single, due in large part to an error committed in the outfield.

Mainers outfielder Chris Gaetano (Monmouth) entered the game in the 9th, throwing a scoreless inning with a strikeout in relief.

The Mainers will face the Gulls for the second time in as many days, as they welcome Newport to Goodall Park for their only visit of the NECBL season. First pitch is set for 6:30 PM, with pregame action live on the NECBL Broadcast Network starting at 6:15 PM.
