Vermont Mountaineers News Release
MONTPELIER, Vt. - The Vermont Mountaineers routed the Keene Swamp Bats at home on Wednesday night, 12-3 in New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) action.
Vermont took a shutout into the ninth inning thanks to solid pitching by starter Culver Lamb (Virginia Beach, Va./Old Dominion) and reliever Joey Benitez (Crofton, Md./USC-Aiken). The two combined to throw all nine innings, allowing three runs on nine hits.
Vermont's offense scored a run in the first and second innings, respectively, before breaking the game open with four runs in the third.
Joe Tietjen (Waxhaw, N.C./UNC Asheville) got them going in the first with an RBI double that drove in Trevor Ezell (Alexander, Ark./Southeast Missouri). The Swamp Bats walked in a run in the second to make it 2-0.
The Mountaineers' big third inning was kicked off by Mike Osinski (Vestal, N.Y./Longwood), who walked and scored on a wild pitch. Second baseman Jeremy Giles (Claremont, Calif./Stony Brook) reached on an error one batter later, and scored on another wild pitch. Tietjen came up big again later in the inning with another RBI double, driving in Will Morgan (Middletown, N.J./Old Dominion) and Ryan Fineman (Bloomington, Ind./Indiana).
Vermont struck again in the sixth, when they tacked on four more. Slade Heggen (Missoula, Mo./Oregon), who entered the game as a pinch hitter, ripped an RBI double that scored Osinski and first baseman Mikael Mogues (New York, N.Y./Seton Hall). Keegan Meyn (Oklahoma City, Okla./Arkansas Little Rock) and Ryan Fineman had RBI hits later in the inning, making it a 10-0 game.
The Mountaineers added two more runs in the seventh inning to cap their offense for the day.
Keene stayed quiet until the top of the ninth, when the Swamp Bats put three runs on the board. Brandt Stallings (Buford, Ga./Georgia Tech) knocked an RBI triple that drove in a pair of runs. Ryan Costello (Wethersfield, Conn./Central Connecticut St. U) hit a sac fly one batter later to drive in Stallings.
Lamb got the win for Vermont, pitching five innings, and allowing no runs on three hits. David Drouin (Boscawen, N.H./Hartford) suffered the loss for the Swamp Bats after pitching two and one third innings, and giving up six runs (three earned) on five hits. Drouin walked five and struck out three.
The win is Vermont's second in a row, making it their first winning streak of the year. The Mountaineers improve to 5-12. They will be in action again on Thursday, when they travel to Holyoke, Mass. to take on the Valley Blue Sox. First pitch is set for 6:30 PM at Mackenzie Stadium.
