Flat Performance Results in SwampBats 12-3 Loss to Vermont

Keene Swamp Bats News Release

MONTPELIER - A poor performance all around by the SwampBats (11-6) ended their three game win streak as they got crushed by the Vermont Mountaineers (record) 12-3.

Right from the start it did not appear that David Drouin (Hartford) had his best stuff. Constantly falling behind in the counts to hitters and if it was not for a key double play and some defense from the SwampBats it could have been a lot worse.

Drouin threw 83 pitches in just 2 1/3 innings and 41 of his pitches were balls. He gave up 3 earned runs on 5 hits and recorded 3 strikeouts to 5 walks. In his two starts, he has gone a combined 5 innings, giving up 12 earned runs on 14 hits.

Mike Pastore (Central Connecticut St.) came in relief for Drouin in the 3rd inning when the 'Bats trailed 4-0 and it did not get much better. It looked as if Pastore was going limit the damage when he struck out Keegan Meyn (Arkansas Little Rock) for the 2nd out of the 3rd inning. However, a Joe Tietijen (North Carolina Asheville) double added two more runs to the SwampBats deficit.

The sixth inning is when everything blew up. Slade Heggen (Oregon) ripped a 2-run double into left field to make it 8-0 and Ryan Fineman (Indiana) and Meyn added a pair of RBI single to extend the SwampBats deficit to 10.

As bad as the SwampBats pitching was their offense was almost equally as bad.

If one were to looks at the box score they would see the SwampBats had 9 hits. This number is a bit deceiving, as 3 of those hits came in garbage time in the 9th inning. Also, it really does not mean much it they are not productive hits. The SwampBats left 10 men on base and of the 10, 4 were in scoring position.

Give the 'Bats some credit as they did not give up. In the 9th inning Brandt Stallings (Brandt Stallings) hit 2-run triple and Ryan Costello (Central Connecticut St.) added an RBI sacrifice fly, making it 12-3. However, that would be it.

The SwampBats look to get back on the winning track tomorrow when they travel to Laconia, NH to take on the Winnipesaukee Muskrats.

The game can heard live on the NECBL Broadcast Network and FM 104.1 and AM 1220 ESPN Keene.
