Gulls Snap Streak with 8-1 Win over Sanford

NEWPORT, R.I. - A day after Newport managed one run on one hit last night, the Gulls offense exploded in front of 2,190 fans for eight runs on 15 hits on Wednesday night at Cardines Field. The Gulls defeated the Sanford Mainers 8-1 and snapped their six-game losing streak, while off the field, the organization raised over $1,800 to fight pancreatic cancer via donations and 50/50 raffles.
The Gulls (8-10) exploded for three runs in the first inning on three consecutive hits by Troy Dixon (St. Johns), Charlie Carpenter (South Carolina-Upstate) and a two-run home run by Jake Brodt (Santa Clara) to help Newport's offense break out of a recent slump. Brodt sent the first pitch he faced over the right-field fence for his third home run of the year. The Gulls rallied with two outs to score three more runs in the second. Cole Fabio (Byrant), Dixon and Carpenter struck again to register consecutive hits to drive in all three runs for a 6-0 lead.
The top of the line-up with Fabio (1-for-4), Dixon (4-for-5), Carpenter (3-for-5) and Brodt (3-for-5) combined for 11 of the Gulls hits and drove in five RBIs. Fabio scored in the fourth to increase the Gulls lead to 7-0 after a bases-loaded walk to Stephen Scott (Vanderbilt).
The Mainers (8-10) broke through in the sixth inning as Sam Stauble (Southern Maine) lined a pitch through the left side of the infield, driving in Michael Young (UMass-Lowell) for Sanford's first run.
The Gulls didn't take long to respond as Travis Young (Wichita State) delivered an RBI-single through the infield to score Brodt.
Two Gulls pitchers combined for 13 of the staff's 15 strikeouts. Andrew Summerville (Stanford) earned the win in relief (1-0), going three complete innings allowing two hits, two walks and six strikeouts. Matthew McGarry (Vanderbilt) relieved Summerville and struck out seven Mainers over three innings of work.
The Gulls will quickly wrap-up the two-game series as they head out to Sanford to face the Mainers once again Thursday night, with the first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at historic Goodall Park. Newport returns home as they continue their non-stop first half of the season on Friday, July 1, when they welcome the Danbury Westerners to Cardines Field for the first of three visits. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. and gates open at 5 on Friday for Newport Daily News Night.
